Help! My neighbor has given me a large poster, 42x44 to frame. The only direction he has given me is that he wants a mat, glass and frame. Suggestions would be great. I don't have a vacuum press yet so I mount everything with PMA or hinges. But I want to do it right, so will take it somewhere else if necessary to mount. Also, can I get matboard that big? Thanks for all advice.

One of the companies has Monster Mats--Crescent or Miller?--which are 4' x 8', mostly neutrals. Foamcore comes in the same size if you want to drymount the thing. Another shop will probably have a press large enough to do it in bites. Use a substantial metal or wooden frame, but reinforce both directions with appropriate straping materials to hold the rails in place, and use plexi. Only take you about half an hour.

Val: We could mount your piece for you and you can call customer service (or myself) for a quote. Tru Vue does make the monster mat, but I'm not aware of anyone in town carrying them. (Too much shipping and storage damage.) There are some rags that come that large so if white or off white are not a problem we can help you there too! Glass is your next problem. Too heavy is many instances. We have 48"x96" acrylic.

Hope this helps.

Valerie:

That wouldn't be a collectible movie poster, would it? If so, then be very careful about how it is mounted. Professional mounting to linen or silk is recommended, and then it may be hinged or stretched.

If it's an ordinary paper poster of no lasting value, then permanently mount it. If you have access to a 40x60 vacuum press, wetmounting under vacuum is fast, easy, cheap, and very stable long term.

The poster could also be vacuum-drymounted. Or you could drymount it in a Seal 500-series mechanical press, in four sectional "bites".

Thanks for the tips. It is not a particularly valuable poster, but a personal memento. Thanks John - I have already contacted TC for some pricing. Everyone there is so friendly and helpful.
