Hello everyone! I'm doing a framing project for my local High School library... They were gifted some magazine covers and the artists original paintings that go with them from the 1940's. They are really cool wartime navy pieces. One of them is a kids push out book "The Lieutenant" (where you can pop out a picture of a tank and fold it so it becomes 3D) and the original cover art painting.
Question 1. how do you hold up the book (thin like a magazine but stiff) in the frame while showing all the edges?
Question 2. the painting still has the overlay paper attached to it where the artist drew in the type placement (the title is beautifully done)...has anyone ever used that in the frame?

Welcome to The Grumble, Vin.

Are you planning to frame the magazines popped up or flat? Either way, I think Mylar straps are going to be your best solution. I won't go into a long explanation if you are already familiar with them.

Jim Miller should be along soon to describe their use better than I could. In the meantime, the archives is a good resource - it's at the bottom of the main page. Try a key word search for mylar and book.

I see no reason not to include the overlay when framing the paintings - under glass. I think it would add interest.

Captain English may want to speak to you about your use of the word 'gift' as a verb. Don't worry about it - she's harmless (despite what you may have heard about the Blue Pencil Of Death).

Welcome to TG -
If you're describing the pop-up book that I'm remembering, they were viewed lying open flat on the table. I would consider doing it in an acrylic box so the library could display it on a shelf.

that's what I remember too...so, a flat one is probably out for taking up space & a vertical one probably wont do for not showing it off, how bout a compromise????? tilted at 30*-45*?????that will calll for a much deeper ..only hangup there is how do you get the standups to continue to stand up when they are fighting gravity????

I do want to display it closed. I guess my description wasn't that great...It's like a paper doll book for boys! Instead of little clothes that you punch out, it is tanks and ships and guns that you can punch right out of the page and fold up and play with.
Mylar strips? I have seen this mentioned several times, but I don't know anything about it. It sounds like the magic answer to lots of problems.
As for the overlay sheet...how about this idea? Cut a window for the original 9 x13, window next to it for the book 8 x 12, and then above that, the cut out title from the overlay in its own little window 2 x 7?
