Hi. This is a project that I completed recently.

John Buck (Kansas City’s catcher) game used mask from his rookie season.

Box also includes a South Atlantic game used ball (John’s minor league) – just for decoration and two rookie cards.

Cards are slightly raised over the grass just to give some dimension to the right side of the box.

Acyclic is from Lois at Superior.
Frame is a standard Vermont Hardwoods moulding with the back edge routered to round off the back. Frame is also, northern white ash, same wood as most of the baseball bats

Grass is from SynLawn and looks amazing. Very realistic!

Cost: Well it was my personal project so I dont know how much it would have cost. Have not even bothered to figure it. I just wanted something nice at a resonable price

Sorry the pictures could not be better. Acrylic boxes seem to be a challenge to photograph.
..and of course it looks a lot better in person.

Alos, the photos make the box appear much larger than it is. The top of the mask is only about 1/4 in away from the acrylic.

Comments? Questions?
Thanks
Steven

It looks great. I love the "grass". May steal that idea for my next baseball project. Now that hte O's have slipped out of their previously commanding lead I'm not sure it will be as soon as I thought.

You'd be amazed at how knowing this detail can put collectors at ease - especially when faced with leaving these items in the hands of [gasp!] a girl.

I have some grass left (maybe 11 x 14)>
I can also give anyone who wants it contact info for the gentleman who sold it to me from SynLawn.

Looks great Steven. Love the grass. Can't think of a better backing.

Meghan, you mean to say they don't think a girl "knows her Ash from a hole in the wood"? :D

Lois does some great boxes....

What about a home plate on a sandy background and chalk batter boxes? It would have to be in a bigger box, but then I don't think catchers like to be boxed in!

Oh forget saving old memories, just put on the mask and go to all the home games and make new ones!

Looks great Steve6095!

Bob, I thought of that. Also had thought about doing a frame in the shape of a home plate.
I order in chops (no saw) so the standard square frame was a lot easier and cheaper and personally I like the grass vs dirt look.

Smaller frame was due to not wanting it to be too expensive and also due to the fact I have no wall space left at home

Thanks for the comments!!

Very cool. I like the moulding choice, especially.

Well, considering what a KC catcher has to put up with you might have had the ball hitting the dirt three feet in front of home plate but that would have been an awful big box. Two boxes maybe? Looks great the way it is though. Go Twins!

Terry - know exactly what you mean. That team needs some serious help!

I do think the trade for JOhn was a good one.
I got to know him when he was in single A. He knows more about the game than anyone I have met. True scholar of baseball and a great defensive catcher. Hitting seems to be coming around too, but he is still stuck in kansas city :(

Simply smashing. I wish more people would consider using acrylic boxes for mounting big/deep objects. I think the minimal effect and lack of dark shadows really show off things nicely. Also it lets us use just about any frame that looks good.

Nice call on using ash. Always nice to relate everything.

How did you mount the mask and ball?

The mask is mounted using three peice of really thin plastic coated picture hanging wire.
Just looped over the metal of the mask and passed through the grass and backing and tied on the back. The straps on the mask cover everything nicely.

Ball is stitched using thread.

SO I just got in an antique catchers mitt and mask........
anyone else done one of these? I did a glove a while ago..... In an acrylic box.
I'm thinking I'll do a frame with the raised acrylic.....

I would love to see what others have done if you got anything!!

I cant see it either........ just wanted to bump it to see if anyone else might want to add to it!

Here's one that I did years ago. It's three generations of gloves.
Grandpa's on the bottom, Dad's in the middle, and son's on top. You can see the progression of styles.
Nothing fancy, just on linen in a plex box for display.

Nic, if you look on LJ's facebook page they posted a cool looking sea fan a few weeks ago.

Here, I found it

Check out this custom framed sea fan, created by Access Picture Framing, located in Kamloops, British Columbia - it's AMAZING!!! They selected our Mantilla custom frame collection and we think the finish pairs perfectly with this amazing piece of art, straight from the sea :-) Many thanks to Access Picture Framing for sharing this fantastic, 3D design with us!

I could see this being done with your Mit and Mask.

Now that is an old thread dug up. I love the concept of the three generations of gloves!

Here is the mask I did since the old pictures are no longer up.
