Frame back pockets

One error I see many framers perform is the use of ATG to attach the kraft paper document pockets to the backs of frames. The documents settle into the adhesive and become stuck. I tore one trying to remove it once. I prefer using a glue that hardens so the documents don't settle in.

Another thing I've done on my frames is to fold the lip of the pocket over to the inside about an inch. This reinforces the paper's edge, keeping it from tearing as easy.

Thoughts or further ideas?

I frequently use poly sheet protectors as pockets - and I tape them onto the backing with Magic Tape or J-Lar. Then the document is easily read without being touched or removed from the pocket.

Works great for one doc - more than that - or something with writing on both sides - sometimes I tape only on the left side so the page will flip like a book.

Of course you also have to worry about pocket documents becoming too thick and causing the pocket to gap at the top and collect dust.

Maybe some of those self-sealing flapped envelopes made out of clear something?

I NEVER use ATG for frame backs!!! Either it doesn't stay on or it won't come off - YUCKY!!!

I often use glassine envelopes ...the kind film negatives come back to you in but in a larger size. A little dab o Frank's Fabric Adhesive holds firm and the envelope protects the document from the kraft backing too.

ATG is evil.

I have used clear plastic sheet protectors from a stationary store, but these are normally limited to 8 1/2 x 11.

I keep a supply of zip lock bags, in smaller sizes. You can purchase a variety pack from Walmart and craft stores. You can neatly slice off the "zip lock" top if you want. These work great for business card sized info.

The best thing I have found is item #5439 from United. They are listed in the catalog as "crystal clear resealable plastic bags". Sizes range from 5 x 7 all the way to 30 x 40. I normally don’t seal them, I turn them backwards and use the adhesive on the flap to secure the bag to the backing paper. If you want more security, cut the flap off and put a couple of strips of scotch or artists tape on the back of the bag and then use ATG on that.

I often use scrap mat board and photo corners as a backer for the information so it better fits the bags on hand.

I use the variety of sizes of the clear resealable bags that you can purchase from United and other places. These are the same bags that people use for precut mats. These work well, come in a variety of sizes, you can see the information, hold up under weight of many documents, and can be opened and closed.

This is what I use to enclose anything the customer wants to stay with the artwork or framed package.

I attach mine with ATB, but the certificates go inside the envelope and have no contact with the ATG.

We use pockets from Rochester 100. They have TONS of sizes and are very accommodating. We get 4 sizes from therm: business card, 1/4 sheet, 1/2 sheet and full sheet (8 1/2 x 11) They have total sticky on one side, which adheres nicely to the archival backing paper we use.

They are actual people, and I think they make their stuff right there, because while working on a project for our church, they could do different sizes of a style we sought....

I wonder if there is a connection between Rochester 100 and Clear Bags. There is a link to Clear Bags on the Rochester 100 site.

Thanks, Ellen. These appear quite nice. I'm placing an order today.
