If you received a private message today from someone who said they were new here and just saying hi, it is best to just erase it and not hit reply. They (it?) emailed hundreds of users, and almost everyone in the chat room said they received it this morning.

As a security precaution, we have suspended this account.

While your email address is hidden by our software, there are instances where your true email address is exposed when you reply to a private message from an external email program. (depending on your settings) I believe this was the goal of this spammer, so they can harvest a list of email addresses from folks who reply.

This may happen again in the future, so I want to make folks aware of this tactic. When in doubt, click on their username and check out the profile and post count. Spammers will often have 0 posts. When in doubt, reply from within the grumble private message system. Doing it in this manner will keep your email address hidden.

If you suspect this type of activity in the future, please contact any of the staff privately - or inform us in the chat room.

Uh-oh.....looks like I welcomed more SPAM......I saw the name but not the "2" after it, and thought it was one of our regular Grumblers....not nice!
 
Spammers are the number one reason that the Australian forum was closed down. We were getting up to 30 nuisance posts and registrations every day, some of which included porn photos. They were able to easily get through the security registration system.

I'm amazed that so many people must get sucked in by these spammers that it must be worthwhile for them to continue what they do.
 
Thanks for the heads up, Mike. I was kind of suspicious of receiving that private message, but thought I'd be nice and welcome the person to the Grumble. :faintthud:


At least I replied via the grumble private message system. I'll be more alert in the future.

There are a number of Aussie framers who frequent this forum. I've been coming here almost every day for many, many years.

That's what I tried to do. But when I "send"ed my message I got a "This member has declined to receive private messages" response. So I just decided to leave well enough alone.
 
Today in my email I have a message from someone supposedly from the Grumble called fishlips about "Chronomat". I did not open it from my email. When I come onto the Grumble, I do not have a private message from this person and do not find a "fishlips" as a registered member. Needless to say, I won't be responding.
