For Kirstie and other IPhone / DropBox users

Paul,
What are the advantages of using drop box over using your own external hard drives and other backup media?
All my precious stuff is on four/five separate externals.

I'm having difficulty thinking of a circumstance that would be an advantage to me.
Thanks!

Ormond:

There are a couple of very good advantages:

1 - You could upload files and retrieve them from anywhere in the world. No need to carry anything with you.

2 - You could store files privately (to be retrieved by you only) and publicly (i.e: provide a link to anyone you want to retrieve or view a document you stored on DropBox).

A a very good example for the Public link: Rob Markoff recently wanted to share a PDF file with us here on the Grumble. The best and fastest way was to store it in his Public folder on DropBox and then post a link to it here.

All the above doesn't mean though one should forgo the usual backup and having a physical copy of his files.

It's good to have Internet (or as they call now, the Cloud) storage, but having your own copy on Flash drive or external hard drive is also imperative, just in case the Internet is down or DropBox goes belly up.

Thanks Paul. I installed the iPhone app. but realize that unless one has the applications that run the files in Drop Box, viewing those files is somewhat difficult. I have opened pictures with the iPhone, but not Word docs or data files.

Otherwise, I wholeheartedly agree with Paul here. Drop Box comes in very handy for file transfer, temporary storage, and public or private sharing. We do a secondary back up of our data files every night on Drop Box.

I also really like Ta Da List for many of the same reasons. I am never without my Do Do lists and I share a list with my web master so his to do list is always kept up to date even if I am not in the shop to work with him.
