Several years ago, my research lab got a fancy new color poster printer for presenting at conferences. They spent a lot of money on the machine, but colleagues were still using a utility knife and a ruler on the floor to cut any excess off. Not realizing how bountiful used mat cutters were at the time, I made this from scratch using some handheld power tools. I made a little kit to go with it that had the correctly sized nutdrivers and some extra blades. Still in use today. If I didn't already own too many matcutters, I could see myself fabricating a new car with a 45 bevel for cutting mats, but no one mats their research posters. Hmmm, maybe I should start the trend :)

Anyway, not much to see, but thought it would be fun to share a simple design that uses easily replaceable parts.

Hey, MacGyver would have used a totally rusted box knife blade and sharpened it on a river rock to get the job done! 😎

BTW John, my shop was located in Salem just off I-57 and after Hurricane Ivan hit here in 2003, I moved back and lived with one of my sons in Carterville. During that time, I managed the frame shop at Hobby Lobby in C'dale. The manager's name was "Nancy" if I remember correctly, and if you stop in there tell her that Tom said "Hi".

Very true! He didn't have a hardware store and power tools at his disposal.
I frequented the frame shop at HL in C'Dale until I acquired all of these items. I still stop in for the odd supply, so I'll be sure to say hi.
