I have a 33 x 33 digital custom produced inkjet piece, printed on watercolor paper with torn edges. I have to float mount it on a black silk mat for the back accent mat. I thought I'd use restore to mount the watercolor piece to FC.

My question is: I want to have the FC inside the paper torn edge - about 1/2" all around. So the delima is not having a "folded edge" when it is put in the press.

I thought about blocking the 1/2" leftover with regular FC to fill the gap in when it is put in the press. then it should remain flat. I'm not sure about a crease forming between the joining of the two FC's.

Any thoughts? thanks

Sue,

I don't know if you're using vacuum or not, but I would think if you're not you shouldn't have a fold problem as the print would just be hanging free.

You could also do a hinge mount instead and pass the hinges through the fom-cor. Archivally this would be a little better.

one other thing is not to clamp the press down.

I always heard the PMA wasn't stable enough over the sixe of a 16x20. something to do with adhesive strength per square inch....???

I have used PMA in the past, but the large size of this piece made me want to think of another option.

I will be using a VacuSeal for the press....

First... no to PMA. Whether or not it might hold, which at that size, it definitely won't hold it isn't archival.

You could mount the FC to the piece that has the black silk mat on it andthen do as suggested and use paste and paper hinging with slits thru the wholer package. Also a hings at the sides near the bottom so it doesn't swing around while the frame is moved.

Forget the Restore for this job. Do it the right way which is the archival hinges way. The piece deserves no less.

Hi

I've had good success with filling the gap with reg FC at least 3 inches wide and I tacked the two FC's together with tape underneath. You can even do this with beveled FC's. Do a practice run with similar weight paper and reassure yourself before you sweat it out while the press is running with the real job.

I've been doing a lot of these -- using a square of speedmount, with ordinary foamboard all around to keep the edges free. I haven't had any creases, and I use a Vacuseal press. Works fine.

There was an article in either Decor or PFM on this subject.

Cut your Restore foamcore a few inches bigger than the artwork. Cut an opening in the foamcore 1/2" smaller than your artwork. Take the fallout and flip it over and fit it back into the hole you just cut. Center the artwork on the fallout, put in between two pieces of release paper and drymount. Just remember to mark the "frame" foamcore so you don't drymount to the wrong side. Then you pop the artwork with it's foamcore fallout attached and frame away!

Not archival by any means but it works great. Hope this helps.

Thanks all. I mounted it today and it turned out Purrrrrrrrrrrfect!

Verdaccio - I used a "combo" method.

My cut FC needed to be 32x32 for my 33x33 piece. I cut the Restore to 32x32, used the left over to cut strips 2-3" wide. flipped the restore and taped the strips to the back of my main surface. (used framers tape and as Mrs. B reminded I was sure to have the nonadhevise sides towards the front where the art would touch it.)

Press mounted at 140 degrees for 4 min.

purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrfect!
