In the manual on page 12, it shows a set screw (L) that needs to be adjusted on the top of the cutting head. I don't seem to have a screw in there; just a hole. Does anyone know what the size of that screw is, and whether it has a flat bottom, or whatever ...?

All of a sudden, my mats are cutting with a Wow in the starting corner, then the blade moves over to the left, therefore it doesn't cut all the way through the mat. This is so annoying, and of course, I'm ruining lots of mats because of it.

The cutting head seems to have a slight wobble from side to side, and I was wondering if that set screw (L) is the cause because it's missing.
Or maybe there is another problem and I haven't figured it out yet, so would welcome any suggestions ASAP.
I have some urgent jobs on the table and cutting them now is a nightmare!
Thanks. HELP!

Many Grumblers are away in Vegas at the PPFA/WCAF Show.

I don't have a Fletcher but I would bet that the screw is a flat bottom allen head screw. Are there in others that look like that on the machine. If so remove one and take it to the hardware store.

Get it from Fletcher. It is too late to have it tomorrow but you can have it Friday morning if you order it now. There a blown up parts lists on the Fletcher website so you will be able to see the part number.

Yes, it is an Allen-Head setscrew, and it probably is in there, but it rests so deep in the hole that it may not be visible. I suggest using a few small sizes of Allen wrenches to try to engage the head. Be careful not to over-tighten that screw, as it could cause undue wear on the bearing-wheels. You want to adjust it for a very slight amount if play.

If that fails, take the head off the round bar to which it is attached, by removing the two screws that hold the bar/rod assembly on the handle. Then you would be able to see the other end of the screw - or not, if it really is missing. You would also be able to thoroughly clean and lubricate the sliding and moving parts.

Fletcher 2200 - Wobbly cutting head

I've spoken to F-T customer service twice now and have learned that there are only 3 areas to adjust the cutting head wobble: (1) Little "L" hex screw on top; (2) two "k" screws on side with silver wheels attached that run on the bar under cutting head; and (3) two black flat screws behind each of the blade cartridges.

The (3) won't loosen or tighten so Cust.Serv. says that's fine as is.
Moving the (2) screws doesn't seem to make a difference.
And I don't have the tool to alter the (1) screw on top yet, so will have to buy one.

Has anyone experienced this problem and if so, what fixed it for you? Is there anything else in your experience that I can attempt to fix?

Hi Trojan,

That WOW or "hook" at the beginning of the cut is a phenominom that exists on all mat cutters, and it can be dramatically enhanced for lots of reasons including play in the cutting head or the pivot assembly.

Keep in mind that having a sharp new blade will help, as will having the blade at the correct depth also minimizes this from ocurring. I teach this in the Basic Mat Cutting workshop at the WCAF Show - PPFA Convention. Let's get into the adjustments for you...

I've spoken to F-T customer service twice now and have learned that there are only 3 areas to adjust the cutting head wobble: (1) Little "L" hex screw on top;

Correct - this is the primary adjustment screw (actually an allen hex set screw down inside that hole) which adusts play in the cutting head from side-to-side. With the Allen key inserted, adjusting this should only happen if the machine is clean and the head is in motion (sliding back and forth). You can then more accurately feel when it is getting snug. You are putting pressure on the roller bearing located on the right side of the cutting head. (think of it as a teeter-tooter with two fixed bearings on the left side.)

(2) two "k" screws on side with silver wheels attached that run on the bar under cutting head;

Actually these are not adjustable at all. Those screw hold those fixed bearing in position. They should typically never have to be touched.

and (3) two black flat screws behind each of the blade cartridges.

Well these large black PIVOT screws hold the cutting heads onto the main head. They need to be adjusted if lose, so check to see if they are tight. When completely tight, the pivot assembly should still move freely up and down, with minimal play. Adjustment here is accomplished by shim washers inside the shoulder screw.

What was not mentioned in regards to the cutting head, are the two small adjustment set screws on the lower right side of the cutting head.

These can also be tightened (while the head is in motion) to minimize additional wobble in the head. They are typically NOT as important as the main adjustment on the top of the head which controls the right bearing.

...And I don't have the tool to alter the (1) screw on top yet, so will have to buy one.

Your Fletcher F2100 should have come with either 4 allen keys of various sizes, but as has already mentioned, these can be purchased at a good hardware store. It also came with a DVD which clearly demonstrates the adjustments as I described above. Find that DVD! :thumbsup:

Hope this helps,

John
