FireFox hangs @ 99% for 2-3 minutes frequently. The only resolution is to wait because nothing can be manually closed until things drop below 99%

I've uninstalled, deleted the profiles and reinstalled and transferred the profiles back. Win XPsp3

Suggestions?

Any suggestions other than find a different browser.

bad plugin or previous version of flash? 7.0.1 is the current version of Firefox. They released a bug fix today

Which toolbar(s) do you guys have loaded? Anything in common?

It's most likely an external add-on/toolbar type thing. I dont see this behavior with any of the 10 or so computers I use on a daily basis, but then again I keep them pretty lean. (no toolbars etc)

I know the google toolbar had such an issue, but I don't think they support above Firefox 5, at this time.

On a lot of sites the progress bar of Firefox doesn’t quite become filled, but the scroll bars and links seem to work okay for me (Mac OS 10 – FF v. 5).

I don't have any additonal plug-ins.

No extra toolbars. I want as much acreage as possible on my monitor.

So far, have disabled nearly all of the addins and extensions. Still happening.

Here is the list of currently enabled plugins

  • Adobe Acrobat 9.4.5.236
  • Shockwave Flash 10.3.183.10
  • Microsoft Office 2010 14.0.4761.1000
All extensions disabled but I'll be enabling FireFTP 1.99.5 since it does not seem to be causing the problem.

We have one Vista machine and another XP machine that has the same plugins running (haven't checked the version numbers) without a problem.

How much RAM and are other programs running at the same time?

Firefox has known memory leaks since version 4.

Does it do the same thing with Chrome?

3GB ram installed
Email desktop app running
Hangs with only one tab in FF open but many times I have 2 or more tabs

Yep, memory leak is significant. Not unusual to see 700MB plus viewed in TaskManager.

Don't know about Chrome. Not installed.

FF used mainly due to FireFTP being more secure than others. (so I've been convinced)

It is strange since 3 other similar XP machines and 1 Vista machine and this the only box with the issue, though it is my primary computer. Dell Dimension E521 with dual monitors.

I just disabled the Office2010 plugin. Problem still exists.

All plugins and extensions disabled. Same issue.

I think this may be the only 64bit version of XP that we have and the best that I can remember, that is the only difference between the machines here. (& I haven't a clue how to confirm this is a 64bit XP install)

Any idea

IIRC, right-click your My Computer icon and select properties. The General Information tag should tell you.

Another way (at least it works this way in W7) is to see if you have both of the following folders in your root drive (unless you have a custom configuration):
Program Files
Program Files(x86)

64 bit applications are stored in the default folder and 32 bit ones in the (x86) folder.

Since it's Windows XP Media Center Edition and
Important: There are no 64-bit versions of Windows XP Home or Windows XP Media Center Edition. If you have either of these editions of Windows XP then you're running a 32-bit operating system.
I must be wrong about thinking that it was 64bit. Must have been the Athlon +64 processor that made me think that.

I have had similar problems with Firefox on my XP machine and my Vista laptop. No problems at all of my Windows 7. I tried most of these things and keep Firefox updated.

My solution was to install Chrome. No more problems, though I still prefer Firefox and run it when I am doing something that requires a secure connection. Probably just an emotional thing on my part.
