finger print/oils on Mat

Don't waste your time, cut a new mat after you clean your workspace and wash your hands. :P

Try using Blue Shop Towels (soft).
Fold into square.
Wet lightly with warm water.
Using very light motion, rub area in circle.
Blow dry with compressed air.
(may want to test on scrap)

Benzine removes oils and paints pretty well. I would just test it in the corner but it shouldn't remove the colour.

Yes I know it's toxic, but it is magic :)

RParrish is right.

The cost of replacing the mat is minimal compared with the time you will waste trying to deal with the mark, following which you will probably end up recutting the $%@# thing anyway.

With all dark matts anything beyond a couple of passes with an eraser for smudges or a wipe with a damp finger for streaks usually raises "fur" on the surface which looks like a pale patch under raking light.

The only product I have ever had success with in removing oils off of any absorbent surface is K2R Spotlifter. But only if I have not first disturbed the surface in any way. Spray, let dry, brush off - oil gone!

I learned this because I have a recurrent tendency to eat peanut butter and every once in a while.....

I use Unseal/Unstik to remove oil spots - dab and let dry, dab and let dry, dab and let dry. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Depending on the mat and the size (basically the amount of $ invested in it), I'll try to save it. Problem solving is a key skill for a framer, so it's good practice to try to resolve things like this before throwing in the towel. You'll learn a lot that way.

Last week I had to dig out a dark chunk from a white 8-ply. After scraping and shaving with a blade, and burnishing it was still a mess. I "sanded" the spot with a Magic Eraser and it was as good as new!

Lighter fluid sometimes works.

Blood can sometimes be removed with spit (butonly if you are the one who bled on the mat),

Rag mats can often be sanded with 5x0 sandpaper.

Scotch 810 tape will sometimes lift things.

Each board is different and you can experiment on scraps or fallouts.

Baby powder or corn starch will remove fingerprints. I haven't had one on black for a long time, so experiment first. Unseal is my favorite, but I no longer have any of that.

With baby powder, I will gently rub with a rag, then blow with the air compressor. I may need to use a damp cloth to finish, especially on dark colors.

Yes, it is easier to just start over, but not always that easy. Especially if you don't have another mat the color you need, due date is now and delivery is in a couple days.

If Less' favorite does not work try acetone
