Hi,
I am not sure what to do here.

We just received a beautiful 5/8" wide fillet to use in a frame. Both are carved and hand finished wood from the same US manufacturer. We ordered the filled from the catalog picture. It arrived with a perfectly flat bottom, no undercut. With it in place at the frame inner edge with the upper edge able to slide under the frame rabbet, the final frame assembly is too thin for the standard thickness matboard and photograph dry mounted on foamboard, which then protrude unacceptably from the back of the frame, All other fillets we have used have an undercut. Is there some trick we should learn fast???

You could try using RabbetSpace - comes in several thicknesses and would add more depth to your frame plus finish off the back nicely.

Welcome to the Grumble!

It might be helpful if you gave us the moulding & the fillet # so we know what we are looking at.

From your description, the inner element sounds like a slip, rather than a fillet. The problem is that the frame profile chosen is too shallow to be used with a slip. Do they have the same style in a deeper profile?
 Rick

I am sorry I forgot to welcome you to the Grumble the friendly place where we all like to share knowledge..and learn..

and did I mention Grumble

RabbetSpace works, with room for improvement, in my opinion. The frame is too shallow. Experience will keep you from making this mistake again. A wood addition to the frame profile can often be made to create a deeper rabbit as well from scrap wood, lath, etc.

I'd consider this a learning experience. There is more to design than just aesthetics. Take consideration of how the different components will be assembled and fit together while designing in the future. A little extra awareness at the beginning will help reduce frustration and avoid wasted time and $$ trying to rig up solutions at the end.
