Never seen this before. This mat came off of something to be reframed. Not only is it made of really low quality pulp core, but it is printed to look like a double mat (black+white). At least they made the "bevel" of the "top mat" look as though it has already turned brown.

We have a local "artist" that takes dog photo's, then computer generates a "painting" with a single 3" wide faux mat, and prints it out. Tells customers you don't need to have it matted because the mat is printed on the paper. But no dark bevel.

Just wait until they try to get the image off the glass. They don't realize the mat is also a spacer.

I wonder why they didn't go all-out and do faux discoloration of the faux bottom mat? They really, really went cheap!!! I'm all faux doin it right the first time!

Print on some faux reflections and you don't need the glass. What about a faux frame? With faux blutack printed on the back. :icon21:

There was a guy who was so tight-fisted he cut a picture of a piece of cheese out of a mag and baited a mousetarp with it.

In the morning there was picture of a mouse in the trap.

:D

Bet it was meant to be a take off of French line and panel work rather than a fake double mat...Still,,ewwwwww...Having trouble not focusing on those wavy arsed bevels. L

Makes you wonder why the artist didn't paint on a frame too and really save his customer some money.

There is a long history of this. There are early paintings with tromp l'oeil stone/carved surrounds, and early American primitive portraits with painted faux "frames", among other examples. I wonder if the same sales pitch has been used throughout art history?

Could be. Maybe they were 50%-Off thru Saturday. :) In a way, a gallery wrap could be viewed as a painted-on frame.

Did this come off "art" or a diploma?

There was a diploma frame mill that used to crank out ready mades
with that kind of mat. I think they were printed on 2-ply chip wafer.

the memory is fuzzy today (shut the front door).... but I'm thinking
it was somewhere in the Carolinas.... or Virginia.

I seem to remember seeing some political "pictures with...." done that
way . . sent by the congressman's office to big donors.

Rick........ speaking of Faux matboard.... have you seen AndyPan's faux leather mat on FB??

OMG it is sooo beautiful!!!
