One of the things I(we) like to do is faux bevels for customers. Thought I would share a couple for your opinions. I know the whole argument about painting the art off onto the mat but for the canyon piece it weas what the customer wanted and the are always right.....right?

Not so much, but the customer is always the customer.

Nicely done on the canyon piece, though it's not really my cup of tea. The Charlotte's Web one though is really quite nice.

I really do need to get some paints and start playing around...

Pirnoid, welcome to the Grumble!

Have to admire all of the effort that went into mixing the colors and extending the image on the canyon piece. It is a subtle touch that has to be viewed up close to appreciate. I hope your customer appreciated how much effort went into that and that you charged enough to do it.

The spider web actually has more impact, and I imagine it was easier to do.

How to you estimate/guesstimate your time on those?

Welcome to the Grumble, pirinoid. Thanks for sharing your photos of the painted bevels, and perhaps you'll also share a bit of your framing background too ;)

I must say, I prefer the painted bevel in the Charlotte's Web frame better than the canyon piece, although there was probably a lot more work involved in the canyon piece.

Look forward to hearing more from you.

Pirnoid, welcome to the Grumble!

More importantly in my mind... when you spend a true two hours (which is what I would think the Canyon took minimum)....
Do you charge and are they willing to pay the shop rate?

for just the "Creative Mat time" on the Canyon I would be charging $120 on top of the mats..... and I'm just guessing here... but it looks like Bevel board and a hand wrapped Durango suede in the general area of 32x40....

So I get a total of $345 for the mat alone... are you located in 90210? :icon9:

costs

We have set charges based the ui of the piece. We got the prices after tracking the time for several months. The design time is in the sales time, most of the peramiters are set before the customer leaves. The charge for both pieces (they are in the same ui range) was $140 above the cost of the mat applied to and the top mats. that covers 1 1/2 hours of shop time and the canyon took about 75 min and charlottes web took about 30 min.

Looks really nice, makes me wish I could paint. My favorite is the Charlotte's Web piece. In lieu of trying to paint, I bought some decorative papers and will be experimenting with those.

Pirinoid, what substrate did you use for the painted bevels - is it an 8-ply mat? It looks fairly thick, but it seems too smooth to be painted on foamcore. Just curious...

Pirinoid, Welcome to the 'Grumble'...
By the way, cool work. The Charlotes Web is my favirite also. Is that a FrameMica around it?

Nice detailing.

Another approach would be to photograph or scan the art, cut and paste some selected narrow strips on a single image in Photoshop, print on thin paper, then wrap the prints around the bevels.

Could also use some of the filters to create abstract textures and color patterns based on the images, might get around copyright issues that way.

I also pefer the Charlottes web job. I have a hard time with the continuing of art into the frame. Unless it is the artist that came in and painted the bevel for you. My feeling is that if our job is done well our work fades into the background to allow the image being framed to stand out. Sorry about the rant... just my personal thoughts.
