The last seven that I had to do were sewn down with cotton thread onto Crescent Moorman suede matboards. The job was time-consuming, but the "wow" from the client made it all worth it.

It's extra effective when you mount the fan to a fabric covered "stairstep board' that follows the contour of the open fan. Good undersupport for the fan that way, too.

I mounted one this past December using mylar strips. It worked great and was much easier than I expected!

oooooh, mylar strips, what a good idea!

Ellen, please explain "stairstep board"

Thanks,

Jo

I wrapped thin strips of mylar around the "skeleton" of the fan and pulled them through slits cut into the matboard. Anchored them in back with tape as instructed by someone more knowledgeable than I am. It worked like a charm!
I was very apprehensive since it was a lace made by the customer. She not only assembled the fan but also made the lace! We mounted onto a dark blue suede mat and it was beautiful. She wanted it to be a family heirloom and it surely will be.

When you open a fan and put it on a flat surface, you can "rock" it just a bit due to the construction of the thing. The place where it is attaches is kind of "stacked" and if you put your finger under the top rib of the fan and lift, you will see that the fan shifts its weight on to the back rib. You can do a fan-shaped riser design under the fan, so that the ribs are supported in several places. The Mylar mount will be perfect to hold the ribs, and ever so much better if you are anchoring the ribs to a surface that meets it, rather than pulling down with the Mylar and leaving some airspace between rib and substrate. Is that clearer than mud?
PS The Braces Guy is gone, too.. have to make do with :D
