This post is a little different - I am LOOKING for tips herein:

I often run into old frames, jewelry and miscellaneous items which look like brass but end up rusting and attracting magnets, so they are obviously made of iron-bearing metal.

How on earth do they make that finish? Does anyone know? It is so thin and smooth - really looks like real brass until I get out the magnet!

I have tried many paints and such with little luck. I thought it might be a real orangy shellac over the highly polished metal but nothing turns out to match the original finish.

Anybody have a tip for me???

You might consult a jeweler. I had a chain (family piece) of this stuff, which I decided to have made into a bracelet. I was astounded when I picked it up to find that it had a real gold look. They did SOMETHING to it that totally revamped it. I was tickled pink!
