Hi.

I'm creating a private Facebook account for
my family to visit. I have two questions so
far.

Is it better to use my regular e-mail, or does
being on Facebook increase the amount of
spam that gets sent? In that case, I'd create
a new one to save my longtime e-mail account
from being burdened.

Secondly, I need to know about what pictures
can be posted. On here, I pretty much post
anything I can drag off of the internet. On there,
is it okay to do that, or will it automatically lock
out an account if it posts someone else's image?
I'm fine with just posting my own photos, but
it's so fun to share funny pictures that I'd like
to know.

Thank you for taking time to answer. :)

I use my generic email account from Yahoo and I have noticed no increase at all in the amount of spam. And Yahoo has really excellent filters.

To tell you the truth I have only ever posted my own photos on FB - so i cannot answer your question about grabbed images. You could probably capture free-roaming images and plonk them into an album on FB - and with albums you can set privacy levels.

Another cool feature is you can post a YouTube address and there is a little screen image and you can play it right there on your FB page or actually watch it on YT.

Do you mean of favorite clips from there?
That would be fun. :)

I like that little surprise kitty. And the one of
walking that high cliff trail that we all shivered
to watch. And the rabbit chasing the snake.
And so many songs. I'm even on there for twenty
seconds, but I'm never telling where.

I like to look up cooking technique clips on Youtube.
One time I looked up 'lemon meringue pie' and got ten
minutes of this dear British lady making one in
her kitchen. She did it totally different than I do,
and I enjoyed seeing her technique. There's also a
guy who does fun Dutch Oven cooking in his kitchen.
I could attach a couple cooking links that my sisters
would like.

About YT - clips can be posted directly as little YT screens right on the FB page. Not just links, in other words.

Just tried to post a photo of the TK TP from the G on FB. (LOL!)

No go. You can post pictures from your hard drive or from a web cam. They do not want to deal with stolen images.

So you can find out if it works by trying to post it and
seeing if it sticks? I could handle that. What I didn't want
was to save a photo, put it on Facebook and have my
account disabled. I probably won't have many of my
own, because I don't own a digital camera. And my
two sisters and their eleven kids have tons of our family
photos on their pages for me.

They will not disable your account, Shayla. They simply do not seem to allow the posting of photos that come from anyplace but your hard drive or your webcam. No photo stealing like we do on the Grumble.

Do you have a scanner? I have scanned hundreds of photos so far, to both email and post on FB. I also have a gizmo which converts negs and slides to digital.

So you don't need a digital camera. Or you could go buy one for $50. LOL!

OK - here is a way you can post a photo on FB. You have to go up to the URL address and copy and paste that - you will be given a choice of thumbnails available on that webpage and you get that little box like the YT box with the little > thingy.

Works better as a format for sharing tunes and webpages (newspaper articles, blog entries, etc) than individual photos.

Why don't you just email your family these danged photos if you are so intent on sharing them???

Thank you for your input, Mar.
I appreciate you taking the time to explain
some things. I know you've done a lot
of sharing on here to help other people
learn the ropes of it.

I totally don't get that last sentence, though.
Sometimes your words seem so sarcastic, and
I'm not sure you mean for them to. I never said
I was intent on sending my family a whole lot of
'danged' personal photos. I just asked for advice
about posting online photos on my Facebook page.
I'm a smart enough girl to know that I can e-mail photos.

I do appreciate your helpfulness. Goodnight.

Why move it to Warped, Mar?

Haven't people posted Facebook questions on the
main forum before? It's not just a question of posting
photos for personal pages. I'd think that a business
having a Facebook page would need to know about any
copyright issues in a similar fashion. Whatever a moderator
wants to do with this thread is fine by me, but I was just trying
to ask it where other Facebook questions have been
asked.

If anyone else wants to post any comments, I'd
appreciate input. I know that you've all been helpful
to each other in the past, about both your business
and personal pages.

Thanks. :)

I am not talking about danged personal photos - I am talking about danged stolen Internet photos (like the ones we all post so freely here on the Grumble to illustrate our whims).

There is no way to post those kind of photos on FB - probably because of copyright issues and also because there are dozens of other ways of sharing such photos (like MySpace).

I have been accused of sarcasm since I was in high school. Sorry if I have offended you, dearie.

We have discussed FB pages for our businesses in several threads on the business forum. But you started out saying you were setting up a personal page for your family only so that doesn't really have anything to do with the main forum or the business forum, IMHO.

Thank you.

I'm going to bed now. I hope you
have a good night, my friend.

I so appreciate being able to come here
and ask questions of you people who already
have experience with these things.

WHOO HOO!!! I just thought of a way to put images from the Internet onto FB. Right click on the image, choose Save Image As, and save the image to your hard drive, then when FB asks to go browsing on your drive for photos - you can have a nice folder all set up and post from there.

Just sort of adds an extra separate step than dealing with the Grumble.

I have several folders with images from both emails and Internet searches - they show up as thumbnails so they are easy to locate.

I have not noticed any spam, you have to adjust your privacy filters from the get go, other wise you will get a email for everything. You are not supposed to post images that you have no permission too and you can not copy and past stuff like here, you have to save it to your computer and upload it.

Beware of taking quizes and anything that ask your permission to use your contacts. Most are harmless, some are meant to gather info on you.

It's all pretty easy you will get the hang of it in a week or two.

I thought of one little feature of FB that you will absolutely loathe, dear Shayla - they have a word limit!!! It is longer than Twitter's 140 characters but no where's near the lengthy rambling posts we are allowed to indulge in here on the G.

That is one of the reasons I am so desperately trying to convince you a blog is a great place to both write and post any kinds of content that you want - snagged photos, your own photos, YouTube videos, New York Times articles, etc...... ;) You could set up a blog to be available only to your family - if you do not want the address public - it just goes to the people you give it to!

Hi,
Never post your pictures on the facebook, they can be viewed by other users of the facebook as well as by your friends too. They can miss use your picture. And about the mail address. Use only the newely created email id, and never give away that mail id to any of you friends or any other person. just keep the mail id for login into the facebook. This will surely save you from spam and other security leaches.

You have to set your privacy settings correctly. Do not use the default setting or yes everyone can see your profile and pics.
