I'm doing a large database in Excel. Six headers/columns, but each will hold differing amounts of data: some very little, some a lot. Some columns are skinny, some fatter.

How can I get a cell to accept all the data I enter and just continuously wrap the text within my specified cell width whereby at the end of the data entry, it will expand the whole row to fit the deepest cell?? I can do this in Works database, but in Excel: it seems I must manually deepen the row when finished by dragging down at the far left. If I don't, the data is there but can't be seen in its entirety.

I've set every possible combo in Format Cells, some with Wrap Text, some without. Nothing seems to let me get it done automatically.

Help?

I think you want to:

1. Select the rows (or select them all)
2. Format cells (menu item Format->Cells)
3. On the Alignment tab, check the "Wrap text" box under Text control

Thanks, Steve! I did that first and it worked for most of them. Then it wouldn't. :( But then it started again, so maybe I crossfired myself right into the correct method!

Here's another one: I put my headers in Row 1. Now I have the A, B, C, etc. across the top and can't see my headers as I scroll down. (Get that?)

How do I get rid of the A, B, etc., and replace them with my headers? I don't want "A", I want it to say Name. etc.

Wish I were persistent and smart, but alas. :)

Hmm.. for that I usually just use the "Split" function (menu item Window->Split). It'l drop some gray bars over your worksheet, and then you can just drag them up to where only the header row is exposed.. then you can scroll the bottom pane and the header row still shows.

google "excel for dummies free download" and get 124k hits!! some of which purport to be 'free' ... might even find one that's useful in the pile

Cathie,

follow Steve's directions - this is very simple. You will be WizExcel user in no time ;-)

Gracious, what we can learn! :)

I also found Yahoo Answers, signed up and then in, and searched for some help there. Seems if you highlight the row with your title columns in it and include the row just below it, then go up to Window and hit Freeze Panes, it keeps the title row in place and lets you scroll all you want. Why it doesn't include the second row, I don't know, but it doesn't.

What did we do before the internet?? :icon45: Oh, yeah..... that.

Elaine, I don't know about being a Wiz, but everyone here sure helps with these issues.
