Years ago, while antiquing, I found myself buying old etchings. Now I have a wall full of them, but have no clue as to what I really have.......or what I should add to the collection as I go.

Do any of you know of books or other sources to learn:

1) just what an etching is and how to determine if it is an etching, etc., etc.

2) more about collecting etchings and determining the value of same.

3) and anything else I should know that I don't know to ask!

Thank you SO much for any and all help!!

Sherry,

I can't believe you started this topic as I had a customer eyeing one of my finished pieces for another customer that was an etching. She asked me what the process was and although I knew the basics - was not totally knowledgeable. She said she wanted information the next time she comes in. So, of course I did an immediate search on the web as soon as she walked out...

This was the first site I pulled up, and it explained it in basics:

Good Roz! Maybe we can help each other out! I've been doing a search myself, but haven't found the detail I want. What you found is a good start, and I did write them. Thanks for that. I've also written a couple of people I know that majored in art during college, in hopes of finding good books. Now I'm going to call the Phoenix Art Museum.

I don't know why I find these etchings so intriguing, except that my father is a very talented and well known pen/ink artist. It must be a 'rub off', if you will.

More later, I'm sure............

Hi Sherry.

I know a wee bit about this topic. As a printmaker, this is what I've done, professionally, all my life - created, amongst other things, original etchings. ;)

There are a lot of books and information out there. I've grabbed one off my shelf here; it's an older publication but, given your basic questions, should be an excellent starting point, and will probably answer all but the most specific of your questions and concerns. It's called "Building a Print Collection ... a guide to buying original prints and photographs" by Glen Warner. It's available from Amazon, used, for about $2.00 (what a deal!).

If you do have any questions and prefer to deal with someone alive (well, sort of), feel free to contact me directly; I'll be glad to help out any way I can. (As I've removed my web site from my grumbler profile, I'll take the pre-emptive liberty of contacting you directly, just in case you have problems getting through from this site.)

THANKS 'Printmaker'!

I just emailed you, but want to say how much I appreciate this start.......and also, your web site is very classy, indeed! And your work very unique........I enjoyed 'shopping'!

Thanks again!!

Sherry,
A whole wall of antique etchings sounds absolutely wonderful! I'll bet it stops visitors in their tracks.
Do you collect any subject matter in particular? Do you usually reframe them? Or use the old frames?
I'd love to see a picture.
