I have gone through three employees since the first of the year - two I let go because they weren't good enough, one quit because (I think) her boyfriend/fiance didn't like her driving into Baltimore City from the 'burbs. We're a three person shop, my second in command has been with me for 7 years, but I can't find that crucial third. The last "third" before this bad run was with me two years and left after graduating with her MFA - as well she should have. I pay well (for this industry), offer vacation and health, etc. I know I'm obnoxious, demanding, stupid, and I smell bad, but am I the only one who is having this problem?

Just kidding! Honest!

You are not alone. We have gone through 3 in 6 weeks. We are in a tourist location just coming into our busy season. Really hard to get help.
Saw one customer looking like he wanted help. I told our girl (22 yrs old) to see if he wants any assistance. She said if he wants help he will ask.
My answer to her, He won't be able to ask you.
She says WHY.
I say CUZ you don't work here any more, get your check and good by.
We have one women 83 years young who is great.
Wonder what it is all coming to?????

Heck no!! Those are common problems in the framing field. Almost all of the framers I have met suffer from at least one of those problems and some of my best friends can claim them all.

I am working on smelling bad at the moment and could use any helpful tips that you would like to share.

(Did I miss something here??)

Smelling bad?? Common people!

Employees, customers and the rest of humanity can tolerate lots of things, but bad smell is not one of them!

Would customers tolerate bad smell too? I doubt it. OK, here are few tips: "Chrome" after-shave from Azzaro; spray on after shower in the morning, (it is not too strong and smells refreshing). And for ladies, no perfumes during the day (too srong), a hint of eau de toilette is better.

And a deodorant is also a must: Please choose a subtle one.

Who knows, this might be the key to keeping employees longer!

But I agree, finding and keeping a good employee in this field, and other ones too, is a challenge.

Having a good work environment, with good body odor..., is a main ingredient to a good working relationship.

I found out that continuing training, industry literature, seminars, etc, do help keep employees interested. We shouldn't be the only ones attending seminars and shows, our employees would benefit too and would feel they have a vested interest in the business, which works out to everybody's advantage.

Paul i think you are wise...if you dont let the employees in to know what is really going on, then they become bored. You want to learn as well as them. Sometimes this training together can make you a bit tighter with the employee. That can be a big bonus. Have gone thru a few bosses-two wonderful-I felt lucky just have known them, besides they taught me a great deal. The other was not smart enough to realize that i could do more. I tried he ignored, then wanted me full time, but did not hear.

It is a two way street, sometimes you got to tell the employees to be honest that they wont hurt your feelings. And you need to tell them hey it is business I will have to be honest for it to work. It can be hunky dory, but if you are not truthful with needs and expectaion on both ends, it will fail.

Then there are just dopes and it doesnt matter. Fire fire fire!!!

That's easy!! Just turn your air conditioning off in your store. You'll be pretty funky by the end of the day, fer shure!

Evidently I have syntactical/grammatical problems as well, which clearly lead to further abuse...

Don't you just hate it it when you make a long winded post, go to photobucket (or whatever) to add a photo, close photobucket and close The Grumble too and lose your long winded post!

Here's the photo very unflattering, but happy employees anyway. Left June, Right Karen
