I had someone come in yesterday asking to have a company logo embossed on a mat. He is to email it to me but I have not received it yet so I am not sure exactly what it looks like - he said text & image. He would like it embossed. I suggested the Wizard but he does not want that he wants it embossed. He needs 20 of them done. Any specific information for a known source that does logo embossing on mats would be appreciated. Thanks !

Best,
Tim

If the mat is less than - lets say 16 x 20 you can go to a speciality printer who has an old fashion letter press and have them emboss the logo on the mat. A speciality printer will do die cutting and embossing on the same press. There are some speciality print shops that will also go bigger; however, they will probally not be interested in doing only 20 (not enough $$$ for them).

There will also probally be a $50 - 100 die charge for the logo.

Tim -
If this is something you might be getting more of, you might want to contact the Veach Company about their foil imprinters. When we had our pro lab running, we used their imprinter to foil imprint photofolders, wedding albums, etc. It was relatively inexpensive to buy & very easy to use. You might even check on e-bay for a used one.
The Veach Company, well known for their hot foil gold stamping machines, crafted from aircraft-grade aluminum, steel, cast iron, brass and cast aluminum. The throat depth of the stamper allows easy stamping to the center of most 10x10-inch album covers. The ProPrint 31 will also handle mounted prints, including stretcher frame canvas and padded folios. Information: Veach, 37003 So. Oak St., Kennewick, WA 99337; (509) 586-3659, fax (509) 586-7774; web site: [www.veachco.com].

Have you considered looking for another framer who owns a Wizard da vinci or asking Wizard to do the work for you? The last I remeber the da vinci would imprint almost anything on a mat and they are a TFG sponsor. I think their logo is at the top of this page. LOL

Not Wizard, but, I do believe there are some CMC brands that have embossing capability - maybe someone that has one might speak up.

There is an tool set available for Gunnar CMC's that does embossing. If you are interested in seeing a sample of what it does call me at 800-922-7914. Superior can provide the service. The effect is subtle but quite classy. Choice of mat is important to the outcome, since the emboss is not very deep.

Tim, if you can cut his logo on your wizard then you can make a pattern to emboss on a suede mat. I know Jay has done this with great results.

You could also cut the logo out and then cover the mat with fabric to "emboss it". We do this on a regusal basis with open v-grooves. I am sure Baer will pipe in and give a quick clinic on this.

You can check out this website if you want to know more about embossing mats with Gunnar CMC's.

www.gunnar-international.com

You can emboss any design, shape, clipart or font into a matboard, regardless of size. There are virtually no limitations.

The Gunnar embossing toolhead can also be used for making instant foldup gift boxes, document folders, cardboard corners, archival storage boxes, etc.

Cheers,

Jared

I have heard rumors that wizard is working on a embossing tool aswell.

I wholeheartly agree - the nice thing about this method is that you get "filled" embossed areas as opposed to just an outline drawn by a CMC.

And with the fabric wrap you have even more choice by stacking or cutting from various layers, so the logo could either extrude from or sink into the top mat... some of Baer's examples are pretty darn swank.

Possilby..
We've actually been experimenting with various other implements of mat decoration for almost as long as I've worked at Wizard (10 years), but the recent added support for the Zund line of CMCs has piqued up our interest again... the Zund has an optional pen tool that draws very nicely.

Hi There,
I am a new member to the group. I searched the Archives on the topic of embossing a logo or signature onto a mat. I am not a framer but an artist looking to get either my signature or my logo embossed on my mats. I am looking for a frame shop that will do this service for me as needed. I am located in South Orange County, CA.

Thanks,
Greg

Embossing Logo/ Signature

Hi There,
I am a new member to the group. I searched the Archives on the topic of embossing a logo or signature onto a mat. I am not a framer but an artist looking to get either my signature or my logo embossed on my mats. I notice the mention of Wizard and Superior?

I am looking for an individual or frame shop that will do this service for me as needed. I can provide the signature or logo in an EPS file type. I am located in South Orange County, CA.

Thank you for any direction,
Greg

Eclips made a "Pin Router" assembly that worked kind of sweet... I think they made about 4 of them before quiting. I know where one is... and it works without burning the paper.

Wasn't Bob Carter raving about a laser embosser a year ago or so - I recall him buying one - I wonder how it's worked out for him?

Most trophy shops that do laser engraving can do that as long as the mat will fit within the laser enclosure. Our local guy can do 24x30 or thereabouts. 40 watt Epilog and Versa Lasers are what they're using. Our local trophy shop says they like tiff and eps files, but any vector format works for them.

Like any new process, if the trophy shop hasnt done mats, it take a bit of practice to get the settings tuned in. Most everyone has lots of scraps for them to use for practice. Then they can graduate to cutting reverse bevels after they get the engraving down. There is also a fine science of choosing the right color of mat that will go with burnt matboard.

Those lasers start at about the same price as a CMC and go up from there.
