Hi, I have the opportunity to purchase an electric Schleicher chopper for less than $150.00. It looks like the blades need to be sharpened and it is a 1979 model. My question to the forum is "what are the pro's and con's to this type? Should I save up and buy a foot operated one. I am trying to buy used since I am still in the military and I am going to start my buisness in about 6 years. I have plenty of work with doing awards for soldiers who move and momentos from Iraq. Thanks in advance

Virgil, welcome to The Grumble. I have never heard of an electric chopper. If the thing works, grab it! $150.00 is a steal. I have saws that are older than that chopper.

Choppers take a little getting used to, once you are comfortable with it, it should be fine. In the old days, most mouldings where made from softer woods, choppers where very popular.

Most of the bread and butter mouldings today are hard wood, such as ramin, maple, or oak. Make sure that you can walk the blades through the cut, taking a little bite of the wood at a time. If your chopper can not do this, it may only be good for small, softwood mouldings. If that is the case, save your money and get yourself a good saw.

Chances are that it is a pneumatic machine….which have electrically activated switches….hence that fact that it is described as electric……if some of the controls electrical/pneumatic are knackered you should be able to locate generic replacement parts from a good industrial supply company………Morso make blades for the Schleicher machine (they are slightly different than the Morso blades the thickness is different)….I’m sticking my neck out here but it may be possible with the help of an engineering shop to convert this machine to a manual foot operated chopper…….for all intent and purpose the Schleicher is virtually indistinguishable from the Morso machine bar the colour….I think the Schleicher is blue in colour…….it will most likely out live yourself choppers are almost indestructible..

Have a look…

BTW Grab it any problems with it......we can sort you out....

Welcome to the Grumble……and good luck with your new venture…

PS
The Schleicher was/is made/supplied by a German company who are still in operation…I sorry I cannot find an address for them…..one of the framing supply business in Germany should be able to direct you to them….

Whoa!! Grab it unless it's stolen. The electronics can be re-worked when you get back state-side. But the basic machine is a pnuematic morso. Which is another name for lazy or getting . . . . oh wait, I resemble that age crack.
The castings alone are worth four time that price.... but let me ask the tackey question.

How are you getting it home? Basically I think you're talking about 280 pounds of cast and steel.
Free shipping? Go for it.

I was going to tell a story about one of my old Harleys . . . . but ahhhhh wrong chopper.
As for foot chopping hard wood, don't let the old guys scare you. I just chopped a set of frames 1.25" thick x 3" in aged and flamed purple heart. About like armor plate for breakfast......

I will have it shipped with my household goods when I leave in a couple years. I see them put up for auction on the german ebay and this is the second time I saw the electric one and wondered why I never heard of them before. I am looking for a very affordable chopper since I have two 10" miter saws and a ezymeasure table. The saws are loud, dusty, and slow compared to the chopper. I want to be able to cut frames in the front room while watching TV!:) I love this framing stuff!!!!

I was having a look…………. the standard Morso E-H Electro-Hydraulic Guillotine/Chopper is listed at around Euro €6895.00 + 21% VAT here in Ireland (yes that right folks 21% Tax on sales) I’m taking it that you cannot reclaim VAT which makes that about a whopping US$10500.00……you have a real steal on your hands even if you have to spend a bit of money on this machine…..well done……

One of the perks to being in the military stationed overseas is that we are exempt from paying the VAT. We just have to present this form and no tax charged. It doesnt totally make it better for serving overseas but it does help for the short term. You have me convienced to purchase this chopper. I just hope that I will be able to get it.

One important tip: don't do ANYTHING else while chopping frames. You must concentrate. Look away for just a second and those blades have a mind of their own...and as someone pointed out on another thread recently, they don't distinguish between wood and bone.
