I just finished a fun job. My customer came in with a piece of sheet music from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial signed by John Williams. They wanted something a bit special (don't you love hearing that).
I suggested incorporating the Moon and Silhouette from the movie. The only problem was how, we wanted it to look classy and not juvenile and to not take away from the sheet music.

Mats and Frame:
The mats are Artique 4906/4905 with a spacer between and a LJ Ferrosa frame and CC glass (I wish they would have gone for MG on this one).

The Moon:
I printed out the moon from a google searched image to just over the size that I needed. I designed the mat in the Wizard software and joined the open V-Grooves in Path Trace. I also saved the Moon cutout separately. I cut the Moon cut-out in a sheet of scrap mat-board not cutting out the exterior. Then I mounted the photo to another scrap of mat-board. I took the first mat and laid that on top of the mounted photo and traced the exterior. I trimmed the mounted photo to this line and then cut the mat opening again on the mounted photo. This allowed me to get the position of the moon correct and have a clean cut.

E.T. and Elliot on their Bicycle:
This was the fun part. I wanted them to feel like they were flying. I decided to use my vinyl cutter and attach them on the inside of the glass. I downloaded an image from the movie poster that I found on Google. I cleaned up the image in PhotoShop and made the outline into a path. Next I opened the file in Illustrator to turn the path into an outline that my vinyl cutter would read.

Good job, I don't necessarily think you always get the fun jobs I just think you make what could be a normal, plain jane job, fun.

well done.

I feel that I have become more creative lately. Or maybe I am just board with typical framing. I think part of this is because of sharing on the Grumble. The only thing that I am not doing is charging enough for what I am doing. This job, I only charged an extra $25 for. Right now I am fine with this because I am basically having someone else pay for example jobs for the website.

Nice job!

Dave,

As usual, your work is extremely creative and balanced.

My only comment on your design....

I would like to see another 2+inches of matting. The space outside of the open V-groove is too similar in width to the moulding = static.

Yes...start charging more. You're worth it! ;)

Dave,

John, I agree with you from looking at the photo. But in person the mouldings shape doesn't look at all to be the same width.

Very nice! I know sometimes customers put limitations on you, but I do agree with John Ranes, that a wider border would have made it even more outstanding.

COOL!!!!!
One of my all time fav movies!!!! :D

Nicolle, I really enjoyed watching that movie with my kids years ago. Funny, out of the 4 kid's, my second daughter (now 26 ) was really scared by ET. Even to this day she won't watch it. I don't know if her own children have even seen it.

But she is also afraid of rabbits.:icon45:

Outstanding creativity! Love those customers who want you to 'run with it'.
Do you ever feel you have more ideas than jobs to do?!
In the long run, I know the ideas I have floating in my head will be put into play when the perfect customer walks through my door.
Your work is inspiring.

Very nice job Dave. I hope you remembered to mark your USB port for the vinyl cutter so you know where to plug it in for the next jog. The bicycle looks great on the glass floating away from the moon.

Wow, Wow, Wow!

Dave, I love this one. You are so good. Can you put some of these on your site? I have a form that we attach to some of the best jobs. The customer signs it on pick-up if he agrees to let us use the photo.

Our son is now 26. ET was the first move he and my husband went to when he was a little boy. They had to leave before the end. Too scary!

What can I say? Excellent job! I love framing when it gets fun like this...

I love it!

Beautifully done. It makes me pleasantly envious because I don't know if I could have envisioned something so tasteful and so harmonious if given the challenge. I am usually adament about not over designing a piece to be framed, this makes me see possiblities I did not see before.
