hello grumble,

i'm opening my first shop in a few months, and making my equipment wish list. mind you, i am starting w/the bare minimum.

i'll skip the chopper for now, and order chopped.

also don't really need an underpinner.

but a press is a different story. i don't see how i can open and not offer dry mounting. the space i rent isn't equipped for a vac press, nor could i afford one.

but the mech. presses are pretty darned expensive too. i would want the biggie 500T. i'm a little scared to get a used one, because my mind goes to that old Seal we had at on of the last shops where i worked, and that thing was a hunk o junk.

my question is this...can one get by on sure-mont adhesive and a glass weight...or...should i just go for a used 500T ?

-bri.

I'm basically in the same boat, but I found a frameshop that I outsource the few drymounts that I take in and I get a good discount. Most of the work I have so far, does not require drymounting and does not cost justify purchasing one - YET. On the otherhand, I could advertise it and possibly get more work to justify - take your pick!!

I invested in the underpinner, and I have no regrets - makes my one person shop is much more productive. I also invested in the the Fletcher 3000 and Fletcher 2100. I figured these were the basics, other items I could get creative and work around until I can afford to buy it without taking on debt. My conservative jeans kicking in!

My 2 cents! Open full-time 5 months and doing great, but will always want to do better!

I've got a used 500T for Sale. The thermostat blew a few months ago. Story at....Good News...Bad News

Here's the offer: E-mail me if you'd like to make this press work. $200 (US) and I'll take it to my buddy, Mark at the Packaging Store. He'll ship it to you (your expense) and you replace the thermostat (Contact Seal customer service). BTW - All of the heating elements worked prior to the thermostat going out.

First person with a serious offer and phone number, and it's their's. E-mail me directly.

how old is it, and how's the "action"?

as i said earlier, we had one at place i used to work. i think that thing wrecked more work than it mounted. i'm not calling you a huckster or anything..just a nervous guy.

-brian.

"Huckster John" - they ought to just eat THAT up at the Vegas show!!

BC, did you ever consider that the messed up mounts may have been from operator error?? If you don't know what you are doing with a mechanical press, you CAN ruin a ton of work and curse the press all the way out the door.

BTW, you will find a more open sharing audience for your questions if you fill out your profile so WE know who YOU are. You already have all the info. on us in our profiles.

Welcome to The Grumble Bri

Everyone knows that Appleton, Wisconsin is the BEST place to go for used equipment. You could probably get a great deal on a mat maestro while you're there.

The price on John's press is great. You'll really want a press, we do a lot of mounting for people who do their own framing (if they have to frame it themselves because they don't want to spend the money... I tell them they should at least mount their poster), for kids rooms and dorms.
I don't know how a 500T can mess up mounting, usually it's operator error. I've been drymounting things since '81, the last 10 years on a 500T... I don't know what I'd do without a press.
By the way... welcome. I grew up near Felton and remember Shrewsbury well.

We have a 500T and just replaced the pad and the thermostat. Every part is still being manufactured for that machine and ours works good as new now. I tried to talk my assistance into us getting a vacuum press but she loves this old mechanical press; and since it does such a fine job, I think I'll keep it. I know it's at least 15 years old and probably closer to 20. Moral of the story: take care of your equipment.

try Century Framing Suppliers in Solon OH.1-800-349-2070. Ask for Peter Friemark or Suzan. Tons of used equipment, all guarenteed, good prices. He buys out frame shops and always has stuff for sale.

As others have mentioned, there is very little that can go wrong with a 500T or TX press. They are like the Energizer Bunny ... they just keep going and going. As John mentioned, the thermostats will go after a lot of use. But these are easy to replace and not "too" expensive. If I was in the market for a used press, John has a fabulous deal and I would be on the phone to him right NOW!

We used the 500t-x for the first 8 years of business, untill I got a used seal 4468. We still use the 500t-x for some mounting applications. The 500 has served us well. Just keep the platen clean and the pressure adjusted properly. We live in a humid area and always took the extra minute to pre-dry before mounting when using the 500. Remember TTPM, keep it clean and the 500 should work well for you also.

okay...i may be giving mr huckster a call after all. thanks for all the testemonials for the 500T.

-brian.

PS- ouch! that "operator error" stuff stings!

"Huckster John"?! John Ranes is probably one of the most trustworth people in our industry. I've known him for years and learned much from his talks. If I was in the market for used equipment and John had something to sell, I would definitely be interested in buying. I've toured his shop and know that he takes very good care of what he has. Just me defending a fellow Wisconsinite again.

I've had two old presses. One was an original model "frog eye" press. The current is a 360M that works just fine if properly maintained. Bought both of them used.

i believe i originaly said i DIDN't think he was a huckster. I used the name a second time only cuz it sounds funny.

-bri.

i'm luvin' the grumble.

I tried to call Century Framing Suppliers @ 1-800-349-2070. The voice recording said I had reached Reed Wilson's voice mail. Is this the right number?
I also am in the market for a used press and a V-nailer.

Thanks,
Cherry

Hi Ed-horselady,

The correct number for Century Framing is:

1-800-969-2070

They are in Solon, Ohio which isn't that far away from you.

Sorry, BC. Guess I should have read your original post more carefully. John just happens to be one of those people who has given this industry alot with his teachings. He has helped many of framers over the years. Definitely give him a call, even with repairs this is a bargain. One of my suppliers sent out a list of used equipment for sale today and there is a used 500t-x for $2700.00.

Gee, I don't know- Huckster John- has a certain ring to it. I have also found whenever we go to his demonstrations we seem to buy another piece of equipment - might be us. We'll see what comes up in Brisbane in July. Actually we have found him to be a bloody good bloke and that is the highest accolade a Aussie can bestow. Regards Alan

Ahhhhhh Gosh Alan, Anne....I'm speachless...

Anyway, back to the task at hand. Brian, as you've spoken first, you have the right of first refusal. I dropped my 24 year old Seal 500T off at The Packaging Store. Mark tells me that a crate and freight to PA is going to run about $350.00. (That's Common Carrier to a Business Adress) So if you're interested, I need to know with a confirmation E-mail that a check's in the mail!

$200 + $350 S/H = $550 TOTAL

Condition: Clean, mechanical sound, heating elements worked but the thermostat went "Phezztt!" and will have to be replaced.

If Brian declines, I need to know if Elaine is interested? Otherwise I'll throw out the offer on the PPFA Exchange and the Wisconsin Chapter.

Brian, Elaine.....Anybody Else for that matter........

I'm bringing this thread back to the top. My 500T Seal Press should be in the process of being crated while I was in Las Vegas last week. During the show, I spoke with Connie Henshaw at Hunt and inquired about a replacement thermostat. Lisa from Hunt already had the answer waiting for me when I returned.....$43.36 + $8.50 S/H for a replacement thermostat -- #100-897-KIT.

Any of the interested parties above want to take me up on this press? Otherwise I'll order the kit myself, install it, and raise my asking price. If no Grumblers respond by February 8th, then I'll throw this onto the PPFA Online Exchange.

???????????Please Let Me Know?????????????????

John

Hey Grumblers!!

What's the problem here?? If I had the room, I would buy this 500T press in a heartbeat. Check your prices with a few of the other resellers.

This is a steal!

(OK, John, I did MY part. Now about that commission check?) :D

John,
Its a shame that you can't get that darn thing down here for that price, I'd take a dozen of them and sell eleven for a tidy profit.

BCFramer,
I'm surprised that you have elected not to have your own chopper and will get your frames already chopped.
Chopped frames must be different up there, because I've never(since 1985) received a chop down here that I could put together with tight corners. The angle of the mitres are always way off and rarely a fine, accurate cut. Still, having seen some ratty corners by other framers, I guess not everyone cares much about that.

Dan,

You're the first to respond with a serious, "I'll take it"........so, I've E-mailed you back with details....and the 500 T is yours! Sorry Brian.... :( You snooze / you loose :(

Anyway, Dan, you'll want to order a new thermostat from Lisa Harmon, Tech Support at Hunt - Seal. Call 1-888-240-6021, ext 5303.

Thanks.
