Customer has selected frame and two mats for a limited ed print - but indicated that she'd like to have a filet around the top mat (both mats are suede, different colors).

I'm not sure I've ever seen a piece framed that way. Does anyone have strong opinions about this one way or the other?

It was a pretty standard up-sell in the mid to late 1980s.
reverse bevel both, so you don't get the fugly white lines that
are so distracting.

You mean a double mat, with a fillet between the two? No problem. It's a matter of personal taste, but it beats the heck out of a double mat with a fillet in the bottom mat.

Yes, that's what I mean. I've only ever seen a filet added to a single mat before and I'm just trying to visualize what this will look like.

Baer, we'd already decided on reverse bevels, so the fugly white lines won't be a problem.

Thanks!

I do it all the time.

The bottom mat also serves as extra separation between the fillet and the artwork. This is a good thing and the way I prefer to include a fillet in a framing package.

Even with barrier tape and perhaps a hidden 2 or 4 ply mat I don’t like it when the fillet gets that close to the artwork with only a single mat and I will try to dissuade the customer from doing it that way.

For visualization.

I, too, prefer to have a mat underneath the fillet. I usually will make the bottom mat a bit wider than my normal 1/4".
I like to see about a 5/8" allowance on the bottom mat when using a fillet.

Conservation projects should always have the mat below the filet and extend at least 1/4" when possible to protect the art.
