I use a Wizard 8500 and usually cut my double matts by stacking them and this works just fine. However, recently I have noticed a slight glitch when I stack multiple opening double matts.

A small hook appears, usually only in the top right hand corner (the second cut) of the bottom matt on some of the openings. If I cut the two layers separately there is no problem. It is not bad enough to reject the whole matt but it is noticeable to me.

Has anyone else noticed this?

If this is only happening on multiple-opening double mats, maybe the boards aren't stuck together well enough and there is some flexing or movement of the board during cutting. Also, have you replaced your blade-holder cartridge lately? They do wear, causing a little misalignment of the blade. Replacements are sold in packs of five, and are not expensive.

You can save the old one to keep on your desk and play with while talking on the phone (stick paperclips to the magnet, etc).

Huh.... it has never occurred to me to stack mats in the CMC. Why do you do this? Is it to ensure better alignment? Or is it a holdover from your hand-cutting days?

Better alignment, faster and left over from manual mat cutter days.

I think I have figured this out and like many things to do with computers it is not really logical.

I recently had a careful and critical look at several recent matts which I had cut stacked and it seems to me that the corners do not quite match up on the upper and lower layers. They have cut out well enough but the lower matt seems distinctly swooped compared with the top one. If I saw that on a single matt I would tweak the rotation about two points to lose it. I usually cut double matts with a 5mm reveal and at this separation the difference is hardly noticeable but for multiple openings, especially small ones, I use a 4mm reveal which shows it up more.

I believe that stacking the matts somehow upsets the rotation setting for the second matt so, for the time being, I am reverting to cutting my double matts separately.

I would be interested to know if anyone else has noticed this??
