Just Say NO!
I've had letters sent to me requesting donations from several local churches, and the local school system. I get that donating items might create goodwill, but I've donated to things in the past, including gift certificates to the newspaper and radio stations to raffle off or for contests and I've been called months later asking me if I wanted them to send the certificates back or just toss them. I even donated some jewelry to a silent auction to raise money for the cancer hospital that was handed back to me (low turnout apparently at the auction...) So I'm a little hesitent to offer anything else for a donation. Several of the places that have sent letters asking put limits on the amount or value of the donated items, and often I just can't afford to donate the amount they are asking for.
Customers aren't getting things framed, but they have no problem asking you to donate to their organizations. I think loyalty should be a two-way street (yeah, I know life ain't fair, but...), so when they spend money here, I'll donate something to their cause when they need it.
Oh yeah -
I do get groups of teens that come around asking for donations for them to go on "mission trips" probably three times a year. They always explain how they are going to go "help" someone in a third-world country and they are taking a year off after high school to do it, blah blah blah. I kick them out.
