~ Domain names: Picking the Pope's Domain Name

If the newly elected pope wants his own website, he'll have to talk to
Rogers Cadenhead first. The Jacksonville, Florida-based writer purchased
the rights to BenedictXVI.com on April 1 -- more than two-and-a-half
weeks before Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger announced that he would assume
the papacy under the name of Benedict XVI.

In an interview shortly after Ratzinger's appointment Cadenhead said the
purchase of the domain name was more of an educated guess than divine
guidance. Newly elected popes often take the names of previous popes in
honor of them. So when media reports last month revealed that Pope John
Paul II was in his final hours, Cadenhead worked out the possible names
that the new pope might select and set out to buy those domains.

It's a pity. I think it would have been much more interesting if say Ron Jeromy or Vivid had gotten the domain. Or maybe a Gay Pedifile Group, or Recovering Victims of Religious Sexual Predidation.

I'm sure we could have followed THAT court battle for at least 2 weeks. :D

But good to see that it went to help one of the forgotten causes of most churches today.

3 cheers for Caldenhead. I saw him on a talk show the other morning and the man is ethical and has a great sense of humour. Small heroic moves in a big crazy world renew my sense in the basic goodness of mankind.

Since the Vatican is it’s own country, they have a domain suffix “.va”. Assuming they maintain their own server, I betcha Caldenhead is going to have to suck on the empty end of his Popesicle stick.
