Would appreciate your opinions on the best way to secure velvet to a mounting board. The customer is supplying the velvet. The velvet is about 40 years old still like new condition. What method and type of board would you use? It will be 12 inch square with a doily mounted on it. I am planning on stiching the doily to the fabric and board. Thanks for your replies.

I would pin the velvet to the edges of an artcare acid-free foam board.

Same as stretching a counted cross-stitch.

Or you could use AttachEZ.

No glue! ;)

You can definitely use the suggestion to mount it like cross-stitch. I have also seen other tpes of textile artifacts stitched onto fabric thathas been stretched over strainer stock/stretcher bars.

OK... I give. Why no glue?

My first thought would be to just use Frank's Fabric Adhesive like
mounting any fabric. I've done this often with great results.

I was thinking "no glue" because that brings up a whole other set of potential problems (like warping of the substrate) or glue coming through velvet and ruining it) and since this is "vintage" (ie, irreplaceable) fabric - see where I'm coming from here???

in 40 more years it will be granulated dust anyway Mar. Stretching it just adds that much more pressure to velvet. It's a no win anyway.

Roll the Franks thin and lay very carefully with light pressure.

Just inform your customer about what you are planning to do, and have her make the final decision. (stretching versus glue)

The velvet might be extremely special to her (emotional value) or maybe not at all.
