 I have always been a Apple computer fan. My first was an Apple IIE about 20 years ago. I have seen that the new macs can run Windows XP and was wondering if anyone uses one with Lifesaver.

If I have to buy a new computer I would rather buy another Mac that my other programs would work on.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Mark

Hi Mark,

Although it will probably work, I would advise against it. PC emulation on an Apple isn't known for its stability. There could be issues with drivers and peripherals that you use with the product, due to the extra overhead. (printers, barcode readers, scanners, credit card equipment, internet security, etc) This could also present problems if you call for support, since they would be unfamiliar with issues unique to the mac environment.

If you're set to use the Apple for this, you can certainly download a free demo and give it a try. The full program runs for 30 days in demo mode, before you have to register. Before registering, I would also call and ask tech support if anyone has done this. There are also other alternatives native to the Apple OS.

For what pc's cost these days, it's probably best to dedicate an inexpensive PC for the POS and save your Mac for other purposes.

Examples:
Dell Dimension 1100 2.53Ghz Desktop w/17in LCD $359 Exp 10/11
Dell Dimension 3100 P4 2.8Ghz Desktop w/19in LCD $499 Exp 10/11
Dell Dimension 5150 Dual Core 2.66Ghz Desktop w/17in LCD $549 Exp 10/11

But that's just my opinion.

Tim Dardis originally designed LifeSaver on the Mac, but realized that his market was too small compared to other PC/Windows users. I spoke to him years ago when he was still designing for the Mac.

I believe that rather than having to worry about designing software for both platforms, he concentrated on Windoze and abandoned the Mac altogether.

… at least, I think so.

With the new Intel based Macs, just about any Windows software can run on them I believe. But, if you have any software that needs to run on OS 9, you're outa luck with the Intel Macs.

Yes, that is correct.

About 10 years ago it was available in both PC and MAC flavors. As the demand for a Mac version declined, it was eventually discontinued. Now all development efforts are concentrated on a single platform.

Mark is talking about running it on a new mac, as a PC program, with Windows emulation.

Thanks guys. That is what I was afraid of, but I thought I would ask. I know just enough about computers to be dangerous. I will get a PC and then I will not have to worry about it.

Thank you both again!
