Is anyone familiar with what watercolors by Dodge MacKnight are going for these days? A customer brought in one of his pieces earlier today, and I'm curious as to its value. The piece dates from 1927 or earlier, according to the information I have, and is a coastal scene from Newfoundland. It's in pretty good condition, as it was hinged with linen tape, rather than mounted. Also, I think the fine layer of dust on the glass helped filter out UV light.

Maybe someone with a subscription to one of those art pricing websites could check for me? Who knows, a high valuation might get the customer to reconsider one of those finished corner frames for the piece!

Ack. That's a bit disappointing. There's a letter on the back of the piece, from 1957, from a gallery in Boston. They had tried to sell the piece for $500, but couldn't find any buyers. Apparently the market for MacKnight's was pretty dried up at the time.

When you read the bio for the artist, you would expect a higher valuation.
