Hi

Just curious what other shops do when the weather gets real bad and you close your shop early. Do you pay your employees for a full day of work or just for the time that they were there? I am specifically interested in those of you who have full time non salaried employees.

thanks, Michelle

We would pay in that circumstance. We figure that they are used to a certain salary and if, through no fault of their own, their work hours are shortened, then they are entitled to their pay.

Wow guys. I've never experienced that in any workplace. I've worked in a lot of places too. If I ever got sent home early, there was no extra pay for time I wasn't there-- as my employer was sending me home to save money in the first place. If I couldn't pay the bills because of it, then too bad for me.

If that situation became too common, I found another job. Though I have to say the scenerio never came up in a picture framing job: I rocked so much at that job that everyone but me would get sent home because I could always carry a shop by myself.

This is an act of God, not an employee's fault.

It's not the employer's fault, either.

To pay an employee when closing due to bad whether is a very generous gesture - if you can afford it. It should not be expected. Most employers would ask that you use some vacation time.

I suggest you try asking your neighbours what they do - I think it may be more relevant given the different laws from State to State, also from one business community to another.

The employer I try most to emulate would pay all of us for the rest of the dayf he decided we should close early. If it had snowed overnight and someone chose not to come in they wouldn't get paid if other employees had been able to get there.

I would look at it as a perk that would hopefully contribute to reducing employee turnover in the long run.

No.

In Minnesota this aways come up a couple of days out of the year.

Any policy based on the weather will be vague. If school is closing a mom with kids will want to go home but another person who lives a block away is happy to stay.
