You know the mats....the ones with gray flecks in them. i.e.:

Tru-Vue used to call them "flannels".

IF YOU WERE TO DESCRIBE THAT TYPE OF MAT OVER THE PHONE, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE IT?

To call it flannel makes people think it is a fabric mat.

speckled

Yep, I love my flannel matts. I have had some customers object to "those little spots all over them" but I just point to one of my display prints and say "can you see them on that print?" which, of course, they can't.

"See, up close, it look s like it has little hairs in in it, just like a dollar bill "

That is how I describe flannel mats. Also I draw to their attention that it is a way to add a cool element to an otherwise warm paper. You get cool little grey hairs in a cream pulp, a real problem solver for when a cool is too cool and a warm is too warm or single note.

I'd try to describe it best I could, tell them there is no way to describe it and ask them to come in... :D

I had a question like that, months ago, about the color blue. Customer on the phone, describing the blue she wanted... well.

Oh, and I like the 'heathered'. Would use that word instead of speckled (which sounds like a Easter egg). And no one knows what it means anyway....

I used to say something like...

they have a gentle texture, like old comfortable flannel fabric in pj's, they add a "softened appearance" without a lot of color...

I loved using them...
