I'm a Mac guy, but I saw an ad for a point-of-purchase workstation that Dell makes, called a Dell Specialty Solution Optiplex GX620 Ultra-Small Form Factor. It has a CPU running Windows XP Professional, a 15" Touch-Screen flat panel monitor, a minimal edge keyboard, a mag-stripe card reader, a cash drawer, a thermal receipt printer, and a bar code scanner all built into one unit. I wondered if this might be useful for POS applications in the frame shop? That touch-screen monitor would be a convenient feature. Cost is $2564.
Anyone seen or expeierienced this unit?

Rick,
It all depends on if you want all the toys or not.

I have a 19" CRT and a basic system with 60g Hard Drive, 512m ram, XP pro. Its all a POS system needs. It cost about $800. Accounting systems need much less power than a gaming system or a graphics system.

I had a cash drawer $300
I don't want a bar code scanner $250
I have a Hypercom T7p terminal $200

$800
$300
$250
$200
----
$1,550

the difference is almost $1,000

I am a Mac person too but switched to Dells for the store . and believe me I love my Macs..

Yeah, I know about the price differences. I'm not considering this- I've got a flat panel iMac setup. Just thought it looked interesting, having everything in one unit. Also, I've only ever seen the touch-screen monitors used in restaurant POS systems and in kiosks. Seems like avoiding the mouse would make POS input easier.

And it may well be. However, I'd suggest trying one out in person before spending the extra bucks for something you may end up rather not having.
