If you bought a Dell laptop between April 2004 and July 2006, it likely contains a defective Sony battery pack that can catch fire. There have been several times where this has happened on airplanes, in vehciles, etc. They are offering a free replacement battery.

You can look it up and order yours here:

My daughter bought a Dell laptop just over a month ago and is heading off to start college next week. Even if we can't get the battery before she leaves (which I don't really expect....) at least it's in the works.

Thanks!

so, I'm thinkin you don't actually want something to "light up you life"????

I understand that this is due to a potential manufacturing defect - poosible extraneous metal chip causing an explosion in the very volatile contents of this type of battery. So Dell gets the bad publicity for Sony's "good" work.

Basically!

I had this problem before with some DeWalt drill battery packs. They really DO blow up.

Had 3 of em go on me over a period of time. They "pee" steam and acid like stuff for about 2 hours. Very dangerous.

The problem isn't limited to Dell laptops or Dewalt drills.

Dell should be applauded for doing the right thing, but think about holding that cell-phone up to your ear with the lithium battery.

(Is it my imagination, or is my ear on fire?)
