Have a customer that wants to give his parents his High School Baseball jersey, his NC State Baseball Jersey and the Extra Effort Trophy that was awarded him by a TV station. Shadowboxing the trophy in with the shirts is the problem. The trophy requires a 3 1/2 inch deep shadowbox. The completed shadowbox will be HEAVY as there are other items that will be included in this Thank You Mom and Dad piece. Any suggestions?

P.S. Moulding needs to be black or silver

Go to a cabinet maker (several) and have them make the box with a front that opens. Basically it will be a very shallow cabinet.

Pick a moulding as your face moulding, have a cabinet shop extend the sides to the depth you need. Have them glue the face moulding and cut and join the box.

If you had a table saw you could do the second one yourself.

Before I had all my woodworking equipment I used cabinet shops quite often. I found it is best to get bids. Prices can vary radically from shop to shop, as can quality, much like our industry.

There are several stacking mouldings for adjustable depth shadow boxes out there. Framicas Box line comes to mind. I personally don't care much for Framicas, but some folks think they're OK. I just think the wood they use is to soft for a large box. I think the box your describing would need a more substantial wood and construction.

For your situation I think a cabinet shop is the best way to go.

John:
Thanks! Have a wonderful cabinet maker here that comes to me frequently to cut mats for him when he builds a frame for his personal photography. I feel dumb for not thinking of him for this task. (Duh!)

I'm in total agreement with you on the framica line. I offer the line, but I never pull it off the wall to show to a customer as it looks and feels cheap to me. However, that being said, some customers do occasionally purchase one of the mouldings.

Thanks a bunch for giving me such an easy solution!
