The stock market crash, poor economy, terrorism, threat of war,and now the weather.

I hear a lot of reports of very slow business due to the deep freeze. I have just relocated, so it is hard for me to tell, but the streets do look pretty quiet. Do you feel the deep freeze is affecting your business?

It seems that the cold weather has weeded out the snowmen from the snowboys.

Overall volume has slowed, but the real heavy hitters are still coming in. One or two every other day or so, but doing some really nice big framing. Most all original art.

The first day over 32 degrees will bring out the throngs and thongs.

Last week business was reasonable, as was the weather. This week sales have come to a freezing halt . Just as well, I'm occupied most of the day plugging wind drafts in my store that make 60 F degrees (in the store) seem warm  . I guess anything more than a trip to the grocery for some milk and eggs is out of the question for most people in temps like these. Cheers and stay warm.

GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! Does anyone know what minus 32, minus 47 with the wind chill, feels like for a week long? And that is Celcius, not Fairhenheit, which converts to even colder! And still no snow on the ground, wierd, but we are supposed to get an inch to-nite that will stay. And I bet those located 100 miles south of us in Minnesota have got lots of snow. Yet I'm doing a framing job of 21 pieces for a show in Toronto 800 miles away and selling into the USA. Go figure. As wierd as the weather.

The first two weeks of January were EXTREMELY slow here - the weather here keeps people inside - rain or snow and sometimes heat! People seem to let the weather rule their days!! Things have started to pick up slowly, but the deep freeze is starting to lift slowly. Sunshine and a cold day still gets people out, it seems to be the cold and the clouds that affects people's moods and keeps them in.

Best case, for me, is that I am ahead of schedule and get to start my tax preparations :D

Worst case - Just in time for my only employee to start giving me grief, whining, complaining, and crying about not liking her job at the gallery - hired to do sales and design and on the spot framing with readymades (actual frameshop is at another location). This is the second time in 7 months that this has happened - is it time to cut the strings?? I have found (or been told), that I am now the one responsible for making her feel insecure; she has never had a problem making mistakes in measuring before she came to work for me, the quality of her framing has never been questioned. I've bent over backwards on this, but now I'm tired.

The one thing that will put me behind - I can't be in two places at once! I have had people work for me in my past career and they have always loved working for me and complimented my on my management style - guess I'm getting insecure now!!! Any advice??

Listening with all ears.

The upper midwest is snowless this year. And we know what below zero for a week feels like in Wisconsin and Minnesota too. The last few years have been warmer than normal , this is closer to normal here. Business has been steady, which is all we usually hope for in winter here. Snow and freezing rain do more to keep people away here than cold.

Two weeks after Christmas were extremely slow. Then I had a big week, then the cold hit! A few big pieces (A local Kincade Gallery that has no alternate frames, I love 'em), but traffic is pretty dead. Co-located stores (Optician, Bead Store, Interior Decorator) all report similar pattern.

I am so new (October) that I am not sure whether it's normal for this time of year, or a function of the cold???

Historically we've always had moderately slow first quarters. Maybe people paying off Christmas debt, filing taxes, etc etc???? Then it picks up firstof April.

Just comes with the retailing territory I suppose

We must be in reverse <strike> hemispheres</strike> climates. We haven't had any discernable snow in a couple months. People are wearing shorts around here. I had the air conditioning on in my car over the weekend. Very very unusual. Although, our winters have gotten consistently milder. We will be on major water restrictions again for the summer. In fact there was somebody in town who paints lawns. I see his stock rising for sure.

As for how it is affecting business, I do not know. I am in a parallel universe here at Out on a Whim...........nothing makes sense.

today was a $2,500 day, which is about average for a Saturday given any time of the year. Saturdays are always hectic and we don't plan "build time"on these days.

Our local newspaper, altho often erratic in their facts, states that Knoxvillle is in a 4% unemploymenbt rate vs. 6% for the rest of the country.

Go figure. Ice and storms affected us for the past couple days, now seems to recoup for today.

Will know mre after tomorrow's figures--we're open on Sundays--to get a more accurate read

Paint lawns? What is that?
