Does anyone know of a company moulding supplier that makes a black floater frame that is at least 3 inches deep?

I've never seen a 3" deep floater frame, and I can't imagine why anyone would want one. 2" is about the max. I've seen in floaters.

Care to share your story?

You can make your own floater effect by using any cap style frame of suitable depth. Essentially you create a shadow box with no glass, the size being just a bit larger than the painting. The spacers keep the back of the painting deep enough into the frame to have the front of the canvas level with (or slightly less than) the face of the frame. The painting is mounted to the frame-sized backing board by screws thru the backing into the stretcher.

We (custom) make floaters up to 4" for several customers. There is no practical limit to the maximum.

One good reason for a 3-4" deep floater is when you want to glaze and cap a painting on large stretcher bars (think a painting that is 6 x 8 - it needs at least 2" thick stretchers). This is a typical museum presentation. It would also be a requirement for many mixed media pieces that need that much space (also, especially when glazed).

We carry lots of floaters, as they are very popular here. The deepest we have at this point is 2 1/4" which is from Omega. They do look awesome, especially if you are stacking mouldings...we have several pieces with floaters inside and outside other frames.
