So I'm sure you all remember those old timey photo's you get a the county fair. They come in a thin mat with gold pressed into the surface. I was thinking that one could recreate this look with the debossing tool, some gold leaf adhesive, and some of that pesky gold flake that is too small for anything but faulting.

Can you all think of an aplication method that would allow such precision? seing as how the debossed line is so small. can you thin out the adhesive so it would sit in a brush much like watercolor? would you need to apply anything prior to the adhesive for proper bonding to the matboard?

Thanks for your help & sugesstions.

Acrylic gloss medium in a ruling pen, experiment with consistency and add color.

Unlike most other adhesives it can also be lightly burnished after leafing.

John's suggestion sounds good, but I'm kind of thinking that if you're going to fill the debossed line with gold leaf, do you really need the debossing? And for that matter, why not make things easier and use gold ink?

Hmm... I may need to play around.

I remember talking some time ago with Brian Wolf about using some of that gold-leaf like transfer paper to do what you're looking for. He said he'd try it, but it seems I read on his blog that there were too many problems with keeping it in place, and with the debossing tool shredding it as it worked.

John's suggestion is a good one and also will work in conjunction with Letraset's Omnicron transfer sheets. The gold ones look great. Just put the whole lot into your dry mounting press and the acryic medium will melt and stick to the transfer foil. When you lift the foil any that sticks to the acrylic stays behind.

The difference is that the debossing tool, can do patterns that only the most gifted artisan could pull off with a ruling pen.

Omnichrome may still be available in England, but Letraset USA discountinued Omnichrome in the states years ago.
