I have a daguerreotype photo that the customer is having the glass replaced with Con Clear. Is it a good idea to tape seal the package inside the Preserver? If so, what type of tape is recommended? If heard filmoplast-P is good.
From the glass to the backing. Then that "package" will go inside the Preserver. What are you intending to seal in? The inside of the frame? The dust cover? Around the glass?
I appreciate your concern, but I do work with a staff of conservators. The original glass, which is a convex glass, broke. Our photo conservator is unavailable and I was hoping to get this done before she returned. For whatever reason we are only replacing the glass and doing digital restoration and printing.Handling a daguerreotype is a job for a conservator. They are so very fragile and susceptible to damage that you will likely do more harm by taking it apart than you would ever gain by replacing the glass.
You may think that clean glass will make this nicer to look at but the fogging is likely on the plate itself. They were very unstable and that's why they're rare.
I would suggest a new frame with conservation glass displaying the cased photo as is.
Scan and restoration is also possible, then display and enjoy the restored print.
Keep the original in the dark.
