is good
I'm wondering if anyone knows what weight the various types of d-rings are good up to. any failures I've seen are due to the screw being too short or close to the edge. thoughts?

Out of the four structural components (hanger, wire, screw and wall hanger ) of a normal picture hanging system, the D-Ring is by far the strongest structural component.

Given a typical frame with 43lb wire, 30 pound wall hangers and 6x1/2" screws, each of those will fail any stress test millenniums before the D-Ring will fail.

Not knowing a rating, I would guess that they would be rated at a minimum of a few hundred pounds.

Other than wire failure involving various reasons, my experience is that a screw ripping out of the wood is the number one reason for failure. Wood defects, splitting (not predrilling), too short a screw and to small a screw as the third reason for this type of failure. These are mostly all human error failures.

Usually I use the single hole drinds.jpg and double hole large with t he extra j bend not the centre ones in this illustration, perhaps switching to the larger ones when frame is over 20lbs or just larger -like a frame on a 40x60 canvas would get it based on my perception of consumer perception even though it only weighs 15lbs

I have seen the bails on d-rings distort when attached to a mirror. The wire was heavy, and I guess the screws were long enough. I must state that I didn't do this job; it came through the door to be changed from vertical to horizontal.

Thank you for posting this. Too many framers use an awl to "start" a screw without pre-drilling (and waxing the threads).

What you are basically doing when you do not pre-drill is inserting a wedge between the grain. Eventually the wood will dry/split and you will have failure.

There is great information in this book:

There are some super-HD ones in the Lion catalogue. Ten screw holes in each and cost about 40GBP a pair. :icon11:

They are designed to use a wall hook and connecting adjustable link.

The links and hooks are a similar price. :faintthud:

These were originally designed for art going on loan from Japan. ..so the hangers would meed insurance requirements. ..

Many national museums and national art galleries require there use for art that is going on loan to other locations.
