Is anyone out there having trouble cutting Cresent Selects mats? Not all the colors are bad, but some of the browns and golds are impossible. It seems the paper is bad. It tears. I have a C & H mat cutter and use a #15 blade. I was using a double edge blade and my rep suggested I would have less trouble with a single edge blade. I switched and still am having a problem. Before you ask, yes I use a new blade. I like the colors and white core but am thinking of removing the corners from my mat selections. Is it me or are there more of you who are experinceing the same problems? Sharon

Yes, I am having the same problem. I also have a C & H mat cutter. I have tried differant texture slip sheets and several differant blades. Until I can isolate the problem I will remove the samples of the ones I have problems with.

I also have encountered the same problem with cutting these mats.
I choose to remove the colors that gave me the touble and hope that cresent can solve the problem. I use a fletcher cutter to cut them so the cutter is not at fault.

Thanks for sharing the difficulty you are having. I have been debating keeping or pulling the Selects since they are not available through my primary vendor. Extra shipping to get it from another supplier may not be worth it at this point.

Thanks for sharing!

Sharon: I will be talking to Ryan Murphey from Crescent this week and will try to find out what is up with the surface paper. This is the first I've heard of it but I'll try to get some answers and post them.

Cyndi! Can't pass this up but if "we" were your primary vendor you would have access to the product and it would arrive on our truck!

Looks like you were at Spring Break! Thanks.

John,

Yes, I was at spring break and it was great! I ordered a new Wizard at that time and I now have an account with "you". Ordering from multiple suppliers just gets pricey on shipping :( so I try to stick with one supplier whenever I can. If you were my primary vendor, however, I would still have to pay Speedee or UPS because no one's truck comes to Two Harbors (I checked).
If you want to change that then maybe we need to talk. ;)

I think I just committed my first "frankenthread" error. Sorry.

Cyndi: I'll check with Rob who drives the Duluth run. We may be able to work something out. Also, I talked to Ryan and Vicki from Crescent. They have not heard of the problem but they were both in Chicago yesterday and were going to call a few other reps and Customer Care people to see what's up. I'll update when I get more information. I haven't heard of a problem either and we sell a lot of Select. I'd have to say it's probably a surface paper issue. For any of my customers that have had a problem, if you would like to send me a few samples I'll credit your account for the boards. I'll then forward the samples to Crescent and hopefully we can get the surface paper issue resolved.

OK. I talked to Crescent. They cut a mat out of every Select color on a Fletcher 2100. They had zero problems. They also checked with customer service as well as a few other distributors and this issue has not come up. I think they had a poor run of surface paper somewhere and unfortunately a few of you got it.

John: Thanks for the information on Cresent Selects. I sent a sample back with Milt on the truck so you could see the problem. I will try again and see if the problem has been corrected. Sharon

Although I've never worked with the Select boards myself, my understanding is that the surface papers used on the Select boards are the same as used on various Rag mats... they just have cooler names. If no one is having trouble with the surface papers on any of the Rag mats (wish I could claim the same), then maybe the problem is with the agent used to bond the surface paper to the core. Could be wrong but it's food for thought. Not gourmet food, but...

John, Did you ever hear anything from Crescent? I have been hearing noises around here (reps and a couple of framers) that the Crescent Selects are a problem and essentially inferior. I have the samples, but have not tried to use them.

You were checking with Crescent ... any news?

Also, anyone else heard that these are somehow "inferior" ( I get raised eyebrows and "check around, I can't say more" when I probe  )even to Artique which I think is their target.

I am also having trouble with a few colors on Cresent rag. The deep browns and rusts come to mind. I have tried everything I can think of. My blades are new, I use a slip and a .15 blade. I have gone to Bainbridge on a lot of those colors. If rag cut like paper buffered I would be home free. Unfortunately, I never have trouble with paper mats but seldom use them. I had trouble with the Michael Graves selection. It cuts fine, but if you look close on the dark colors, you will find shiny spots. It looks like the ink didn't adhere the same in some spots. I sure wish we had the old W series back again.

Cliff and Sharon: Sorry, this one did slip by me a few months ago! I sent Sharons sample to Crescent. (It was a small strip) They checked what they could, surface paper adhesion, thickness ect and could not find anything out of the ordinary. Since this post originally came up I did have my reps ask other customers who have become Select users if they were having any problems with the boards and the general response was no, other than the gold would tend to show small overcuts more than most metallics. Sorry, this isn't really an answer but it's were I'm at right now. I do have the Crescent regional manager coming in on Wednesday and I'll follow up with him to find out if there have been any other issues.
