I received a nice big box of Crescent mat samples. All the new stuff. Should I just pitch ALL my old Crescent samples or are some of them still good? Looks like they've changed numbers of some, discontinued others.

Denny, if you got a complete set, pitch the old ones and avoid confusion.

Unlike moulding samples, I've burned mat samples in the fireplace with no serious side-effects.

I got my samples. A nice little note in the top said, "Due to heavy demand, we were unable to fill your entire order. Please reorder in 30 days."

I just checked boxes on the card. How am I supposed to know what I ordered? Is Crescent unable to simply put the other stuff on backorder?

Doesn't seem right to me.

Denny, after careful reconsideration, I'd recommend you don't pitch or burn your old samples.

(Truth be told, what I'd really recommend is Bainbridge, but that isn't the question you asked.)

I got the same box and message that Richard got. How do we know what to reorder in 30 days? Will they know what wasn't included in that box, because I sure don't! I don't know if it's a complete set or not, apparently not, with the note.

I'm already running into problems with matbd orders for jobs. "That one has been discontinued, substitute it for this one, it's close to the same color...I think." Or..."That one hasn't been discontinued but it has a different number now, use this number from now one."

I'm about ready to pull them all until "they" get it all straightened out, because right now it isn't going be me doing the straightening out, I have framing to do.

Ron,
Actually the shop has samples from Crescent, Bainbridge and Artique. The previous owner kept all the old stuff. The shelf under the table with the sample racks has three stacks of corner samples. I was looking in my back room and found two more stacks of old corner samples. I think I'll take your first advise and pitch all the old samples.

I also got the infamous reorder card.

Actually, I received the packet from Crescent at home with the card in it before I bought the shop. I sent it in. Then I found the same packet at the shop after I bought it. It had been several weeks since I had sent the first card in. I figured becouse I was home based at the time Crescent wasn't going to send it. So, I sent in the second card. The day I mailed the second card was the day I received the box of samples from submitting the first card. I wonder if I'll get a second full set including the mats they were out of.

Sample Shortage? we MUST be in a recession

I've been unsuccessful on getting my set of Crescent Ragmat samples replaced, for the past 4 months. 2 distributors I buy from are saying they can't get them. I sent an e-mail to Crescent Cardboard, and they've yet to acknowledge the e-mail or even to tell me to go take a flying leap. Anybody have ideas on how to expedite this?
Is this some sort of Bizzarro Marketing tactic on their part??

Thanks - grumble on.

Just before Christmas I asked my distributor about getting a new set of samples and they didn't have any in stock but they said Crescent would send them a set that they could pass on to me - this was swiftly accomplished and then several weeks after that Crescent sent me a duplicate set (which I returned to my distributor).

So samples are out there.....floating around somewhere! :)

Because we have had issues with the sample sets (from all companies) sometimes containing already discontinued colors, we always match the olds and news together before pitching the olds. There are always a few news left over, and a quick call to a patient distributor will find out if they are no longer available, or if we have lost the sample (which happens more often than you'd think...)

I have been trying to get new Crescent samples since December to replace my old worn and faded sets.

I was told by the Southeastern Regional Coordinator "At this time, Crescent is not sending out sample corners. This is because they are re-boxing the new colors for 2008. I will put you on a list and as soon as they are released, I will order those for you. The estimated timing could be February or March. I can only give each shop 1 set. Is there an important reason why you need so many sets?"

I had to explain that we have two planning tables each with its own samples.
I only ordered one set of each except for the rag RMC4 I needed two sets, and I also ordered two of each specifiers, is that to many?. I ended up canceling the black core, suedes and linens.
I guess I will be using Bainbridge suedes and linens.

As of today I haven't received any samples from Crescent.

Did anyone request any materials from them at the Vegas show? I have yet to see anything show up, and I'm wondering.....hmmmmm.

I did. The new set showed up last week....after a phone call or two to remind them that I was still waiting.

The only way that I got my Crescent samples last year when I started the business was I kept hounding them and told them I would just use the bainbridge mats instead! it worked at least I didn't have to pay for Crescent!

-With the old samples you can always use them to mount your Fillet samples to! ;)

Or create a template and put V-Grooves in them so demonstrate what a V-groove looks like with that color and core. Credit goes to Jared Davis for that one though.

If you have kids they make great boomerangs, I'd pitch them, literally.

First, we got our yearly replacement samples in Feb. We replace every year. We do take the time to match up samples to POS database. 90% are old tried and true and we don't bother. Once in a blue moon, we find a stray. Figure it's better to spend a little time now then wait until a customer picks that special color. It's not that time consuming

We, too, used our old samples to install filets. Problem is how in th eheck do you display 80-100 corner samples with filets attached. Way too messy. After about a month we took them all off and went back to "the old way"

Ok Bob, I'll bite, What's the "old way"? yah 80 fillet samples--it gets so crazy-Sorry if this is a frankenthread!

Okay "The old way"

Had all the filets with velcro attached to a wall surface or on boards. 80 or so took up about 1 row of space used for traditional corner chevron style samples. When looking for a specific gold or matching Antica filet took about 6 seconds

"New Way"

Installed filet on inside lip of 4" nat corner sample. 80 of those bad boys would easily take entire display rack used for mat samples. When looking for specific filet, would require going through entire selection of pulling out corners taking just a "tad" longer

So, my question still is: If you install filets onto mat samples, how do you a) store them and b) find them easly to show client

I must say we have reverted back to our "old ways"

Kind of like a Navy blazer, eh Bob. How do you improve on "it works, and works well"?

Also, if they are on the wall, customers can look for the one they want to use as a frame... :D
