Credit Card Scam

I got a phone call last week for 70 pieces of 32" X 32" plain glass and he wanted it shipped to Ghana. He wanted to use a credit card to pay for it. I was to give him a total after finding out the S & H from a freight company he uses.

Then I got this e-mail from Larson-Juhl:

We have received multiple calls from customers alerting us to what appears to be a scam targeting custom framers particularly in the Midwest.

The scam involves a large order for glass and metal frames that are paid for by credit card and shipped outside the United States. The credit cards being used in these instances are stolen.

This appears to be an organized effort, so please be on alert for any larger orders that seem out of the ordinary.

This sounded just like my order. If you are unsure about a charge card you can call Visa or Mastercard to verify address.

Thanks for the warning Mike.

We've discussed this several times but there is always a chance that someone missed it in previous posts.

Welcome to The Grumble.

They tried it on us here in Canada too. I remembered seeing something similiar here on the board so I was very suspicious about it. Turned out to be the same thing.

The guy was very hard to hear (kept cutting in and out) and he was insistent that we hurry up and ring it through, even when we said we'd figure out the discount for such a large order - he said he didn't want a discount on it. THat sent up huge red flags right there.

We tried to get in touch with the credit card companies (our own, the one for the number he gave us, then even and bank in town we could think of) and not one of them would help us. THey all just said "it's up to you" and that was it.

So, basically, we were calling and saying that we thought somebody's card was stolen and they were trying to put thousands of dollars of stuff on it, and they did nothing about it.

If I were the customer who's card they were trying to use and they wouldn't check with me, I'd be SO peeved!! We just couldn't believe it. And then, they basically would not even help us either - so we could have very easily lost that money but they had nothing to say about it.

FINALLY - one of the places we called told us not to take it. She said that if we take it without the actual card and the signature, we would not be covered and we would lose our product.

A similar effort was tried on us last week although it was for Museum Glass and a very basic black frame. Names used were "Jackson Smith" and "Samuel Jackson", the original enquiry was submitted from our website form - subsequent emails were from Yahoo and Hotmail addresses stressing urgency and the use of a MasterCard.

What I really want to know is who upsold these scamming folks to museum glass?

Just got "the call" here in Memphis about 5 minutes ago.

I informed the caller I was well aware of this scam due to previous information provided by the internet picture framing community.

The caller hung up...

My caller ID showed:

"IP-Relay 408.822.1645"

Mike,

I was curious to see if the domain was overseas, so I did a “Whois” search and came up with,

“WHOIS results for 408.822.1645

Location: Unknown

Sorry, it does not appear that 408.822.1645 is a valid domain or IP.”

No big surprise, I guess.

Looks like the call came from Sunnyvale CA

You’re right, Jerry, I wasn’t paying attention.

I just pasted what Mike had posted.

408.822.1645 looks more like a phone number. I Googled it and it appears that that number has been used and reported often for scams very similar to this one.
