I just got a new credit card machine and noticed on the receipt that the customer signs it shows their complete credit card number. The second copy I print only shows the last 4 digits. My previous machine used two part paper and it only printed once so both copies only showed the last 4 digits. So, maybe since this is the first time I have used one with the two part process it is new to me. I don't think I am comfortable having the customers full credit card number in my posession. The credit card processing co. said this is in full compliance of the law. She said it is to my advantage to have that number just in case there is a problem with the machine or an outage of some kind. She said she could reprogram it for me if I choose but I thought I'd see if there is an advantage the way it is.

So, do any of you have the full card number on your copies?

It is common in many of the big retailers for the full number to appear on the store copy of the reciept. On our old c.c. processor, it would print it out on our copy, and the last four digits on the customer copy.

And I just checked, it has it on the new system, too. But it isn't very "easy" to spot. I had to search for a while, at first I thought it was our merchant id.

My last cc machine printed customer full # and shop copy first 3 or 4 and last 4.
As I ship most of my products (and a good option if you do feel uncomfortable with having full # showing), I would use a wide red texta marker on the #.
This blots it out completely illegible on the client copy.
Should be similar papers used in the US, try it.

Okay, that is good enough for me. Guess i just found it odd since my old machine didn't do it that way. I will definitely have to be more careful of how I handle them from now on......

Thanks!

And quite honestly Lance,

I wish it were that way here too. But in the state of Ohio, I have the complete # on my copy and the customer has only the last four showing.

That seems backwards! What if you gave the customer your copy (our copy is the top one, white), signed, and keep theirs (the 2nd one...yellow), also signed? Does it matter, as long as you have an original signature on file??

Our machine prints only last 4# on both. Never thought to look...learned something else here!

Val, My old machine was like yours with the 2 part paper and it printed the last 4 digits on both copies. This new machine has the thermal paper and spits out one copy with a place for customer to sign and second copy is for the customer to keep, that is the copy that only has the 4 digits showing. Hope I get used to it, it has honestly creeped me out. If even one customer expresses concern I think I'll have the card service reprogram it. I can't recall more than a time or two that I have ever needed to know the card number anyway.

Love the machine though, I had an old Tranz 330, a true dinosaur. This new one is very fast.....

So Kath, why wait? If it can be re-programmed to "No Creepin'" mode, why not just do it for your own peace of mind? If it's nagging you, there must be a good reason...listen to the little voice!

I know everone is missing something hear or did I?

The states you give a customer reciept it can only ahow last four #'s.
But That does not mean your copy of the transaction. you must I repeat you must retain a copy of the signed reciept with the customers signature on it! That is your only proof that that account number with signature was in you rstore & bought something. I am not sure but I believe you have to retain this record for 7 years it may be different with each state give or take two or three years. Check with your accountant.
I had a cuswtomer who said she did not want her account number on my copy reciept. Demanded I make illegeable. I told I would be more than glad to but then she would have to provide me with some other form of payment. She told me it was against the law for me to do that. I educated her and told her if she thought I was wrong by all means contact the State attorney general I was sure they would set me staright. Guess what? She did and I recieved a phone call a two weeks later. She said she had talked to the SAG and they confirmed what I had said & she apoligized for the miss undersatnding.

The customer is not always right!~

She ahs been back in & she has paid by credit card. All is well!~

Seven years is the term we have to hold them for, this ekwates to 30 something very large boxes full of ruddy little bits of paper!!!

The signiture on your copy relates to the transaction number which can also be traced up to seven years later for the exact card number if rekwired (ours has a set of four missing).

Gumby, you are entirely right.... "missing something..."

Now I don't know about others, but by the end of the year, many of my Thermalgraphic printed receipts are less then readable...and going away fast.

We've been audited before and we all end up holding the grubby little piece of paper up to the light, oblique light, and finally in the slot on the weegie board....

This last winter I purchased a wonderful little scanner and software called "Neat Receipts".. the IRS will accept those scanned images as the original. "Because the images DO NOT FADE".

So keeping those boxes of "ruddy little bits of paper".. why?

Thanks BC for the confirmation!~
I just reread my post. Dang!~ I have to remember to proof read before I hit the submit button!~ LOL

It's easier and our archive is not really lacking on space. Why spend all that time scanning or paying someone to scan them, maybe in a tiny shop it is viable but it would be a lot of wasted time to do that here. In an audit these documents are never used anyhow as the service provider will satisfy the auditor, its all just sillyness!

i had a customer a few months ago sign the store copy of the cc slip and then use the pen to mark out his cc #. I let it go, but wanted to explain to him my rights as a store owner, etc as Gumby explained in an earlier post. BUT after he left I did a reprint of the cc reciept and stapled it to the signed and marked out copy. I was happy and the customer was happy.
