Does anyone know of any resources for creative matting techniques. I do some different ones now but I would like to try new ways with some of my stock prints. Thanks, Bonnie

Years ago I had a book. It was called 'Modern Matting'. Can't remember the publisher or author and unfortunately I leant it to someone and never seen it since.:icon20: The (framing) supplier I got it from had it in their cat until recently, but not any more. It was a U.S. book, so shouldn't be too difficult to track down a copy. I will try to find out more. It had some great designs, tips and tricks.

Theres one on EBay

professional mat makers encyclopedia of design(or is that mat cutter`s? Book is 2 flights of stairs down from me right now...ain`t fetching it !)Interesting read, unfortunately the step by step instructions only make a certain width....BUT...can relatively easily be changed mathematically to alter. Just an interesting book, with a metric buttload of corner ideas ! L.

A sobering thought.....

Fancy mat designs are fun to do - the first time anyway. Next time you do the same one it rapidly becomes hard work. They are great for demo pieces to show off your skills, but the time and labor invovled is considerable. You can never charge enough to recoup your time. CMC's will do the same thing in a fraction of the time.:icon20: Nowadays I hardly ever go further than v-grooves and fillets and a few lines.

Well, maybe I should have been a little more clear on what I mean by creative matting. I will try to include one of the prints (Makulu) that I use a technique on. I really don't mean insets and offset corners, etc. I mean really different uses of mats. Hopefully I can figure out how to add a picture. Ok, here goes.............. Makulu 2.jpg

Right. Gotcha.:icon21:

That reminds me of a horse photo I did once. It was about 20x24, just the horse's head and neck with the head turned to the side. The background was very distracting. There was was also a woman in the background who the customer didn't like much and wanted her matted over. This wasn't really possible without chopping the horse's nose off, so I cut an oval centered on the head and hand cut an extension to the oval following the outline of the nose. I wish I had taken a photo because the effect was quite spooky. It looked as though the horse was poking his nose out of the frame.:)

VERY Nice idea...

WOW - That picture of Misha and Mapenzi - (OUR Perth Zoo Giraffes) certainly gets around !

Great work !

Oh tell me more about the print. People often ask me what Makulu means and if I know anything about it. I have also seen it called The First Kiss. Is that what Makulu means?

I dont know really what it all means, except that when the Perth Zoo Giraffe Misha gave birth to Mapenzi, a photographer snapped a perla of a photo and it appeared on the front pages of our local newspapers. I have since seen the print with the caption of "The First Kiss" in many shops, but was pleased to see that it is World renound ;) I think that the Giraffe is also called Makulu ? but correct me if you want :)

had a brain fart...

The actual title of the odd little book I found was: The Professional mat Cutter`s Encyclopedia of Classic design by Evelyn Harper CPF. Interesting from the info standpoint.Author apparently tried her technique on several Very NON framers(truck driver, day care worker etc.).Supposedly anyone can do it.....right. Book comes packaged with an acrylic diag. corner gauge. L.
