Hello all
A customer wants a couple of old, very expensive posters made in italy in the 20's and 30's mounted with 100% archival linen backing. I don't do that kingd of mounting here in my shop. Does anyone in the Seattle area able to help out? He has a time frame of 3 weeks. Anyone?
Thanks in advance

We use Phoenix Restoration in Shoreline for treatment of art on paper........I highly recommend them. They mounted a WWI poster on linen for us recently.206-417-4981.......tell them Anabel's sent you. www.phoenixartrestoration.com

I was just blank on their name.
Fast run and didn't want to spend the time necessary for a proper beating, so I didn't stop.... next time you can take a swing at me. :D

Is linen backing still the prefered backing? I heard recently backing on to japanese rice paper was.

Some collectors prefer the fabric backing because it is more sturdy, especially for large items that need to be rolled for shipment.

The usual routine for fabric backing is to first wet-mount a fine lignin-free paper to the poster, which gives it a smooth backing and prevents the fabric's texture from showing through. Then the fabric is wet-mounted to that.

I suggest ordering a few inches of fabric margin on the perimeter, which is handy for hinging or stretching the mounted poster to a sturdy backing of fluted polypropylene lined with 4-ply alpha cellulose.

It one of those circular discussions, but if the piece is rare and/or valuable, the less done the better - depending on condition.

All things being equal, the preferred sequence of intervention would be

encapsulation (no treatment)
Japanese paper backing
Japanese paper backing then linen backing

Tight timelines may preclude the research necessary for determining the best treatment: this would be especially important for valuable/rare pieces.
