I had a large poster print come in for reframing. It had been water damaged. The poster was drymounted to Foamcore and severely warped (center of the poster sticking out).

After hearing so much about counter mounting here, I thought I'd use it to help flatten the foamcore. I drymounted a piece of kraft paper to the backside.

I just finished it about 30 minutes ago and let the piece cool. It is still as warped as before. Did I do something wrong?

Maybe using a similar paper to that of the poster, also leave it in the press and let it cool over night.

  1. Countermounting done as a WET mount can help in some cases
  2. There's a limit to what counter-mounting can do
  3. Drymounting kraft on the verso isn't going to do much if anything

Since you have drymounted the kraft to the back you can try wetting the kraft and it will shrink some. When it shrinks it will pull the piece so the edges go back and the center pushes forward. This is a toss up as to how effective it will be but will show some improvement.

Water made it warp, and water will make it un-warp. I think Jeff's given you the best advice -- wet the Kraft paper you just drymounted to the back of the board.

If it doesn't pull enough, cut a circle or lozenge of Kraft that is about 3/4 of the interior.... and wet mount it in the center.
