I have a Milwaukee 14.4 volt drill / driver that is a few years old. Lately it's been stuttering on and off (up to 3 seconds each) as I hold the trigger down... the batteries also are a bit old, won't hold a charge very long. I am reluctant to buy new batteries if the problem is with the drill... any thoughts? What kinds of drills do you all use?

I believe Miwaukee Tools has a five year warranty on all their tools from date of purchase. You might just want to send it in and have them fix it if it is the drill. I think the batteries are only covered for a year. Here is their web site.

I would suspect the potentiometer/switch is going. It could also be the battery contacts. Try cleaning the battery contacts to make sure they are free of dirt or grime.

Drills are pretty much disposable/inexpensive, if it is out of warrantee.

We have a small, Skil ixo lithium ion driver. love it. small, plenty of power to drive a screw into hard woods. comes with a hex end drill bit to predrill if needed.

one at each store and I think Santa will be bringing one to the house.

You can only write it off for 3 yrs.... so a Ryobi will see you that long.. or longer.
The batteries are the most expensive part.. unless you buy the kit.

My batteries were trash on my 5 tools of 18v DeWalt... a single battery was $54 at Home Depot. But a new 3/8" drill with 2- batteries and charger was on "Special Buy" @ $78 . . .

And when those batteries are toast... I'm chucking the whole lot and buying Ryobi.

Harbor Freight

Bright Fluorescent Orange 14.4 or 18 v versions variable speed, keyless chucks.
Watch the flyers, either are usually $39 depending upon the flyer. Spare batteries are $29 making a second complete drill @ $39 a better option.

Great drills for the money. They're almost like the old Times watches. They take abuse and keep on working. In addition to framing duties, a pair of them drilled and screwed almost 2000 sq feet of deck a couple of years ago.

BEWARE: The Harbor Freight branded BLUE and BLACK ones are not worth a carp.

I agree! I got mad at some of that junk, pitched it in the dumpster, and went to Home Depot and bought Milwaukee.

Sounds like Frank has a bad trigger. I replaced one a year ago in a $200 drill for $15. That was a little cheaper than buying a new drill.

Did I mention I like the hammer drills. Just in case you need to hang something in someones basement remodel.
