Something a bit uplifting.
I'm framing some military memorabilia from WWII. The items include two set of dog tags, the Marine emblem from a field cap, a photo, a letter from the man's commanding officer to his parents, and volcanic ash from the slopes of Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Gima that the young marine brought back with him from the Pacific Theater in 1945.
His son is having this done for him.
I'll have to admit I was a little bit shaky trying to get that ash into a Mylar envelope.

edit: typo

There's nothing extraordinary about the framing design, actually pretty cut and dried, but the elements are what make it special. The thought of that young man, in the middle of war, gathering a bit of the soil he was fighting for and keeping it all these years.
My dad served in North Africa durring WWII, and I've framed a lot of Militaria, but this one just struck me as something special.

Currently framing entire shark jawbone, open mouthed. Those teeth are razor sharp! Lady brought it back from Hawaii right after that surfer girl lost her arm. Lady is having it framed for her grandson. I just love the really interesting things. Happy Holdiays!

This has got to be the coolest business in the world! You never know what is going to walk in the door next. Yesterday was the coincidence of running from diplomas (cheap guy) who has the same last name (and not a common one either) as the guy who brought in a school silhouette of his son and spent twice as much in 1/4 of the time. And lots of needlework. I have one customer that brings in 2 or 3 pieces a WEEK! I said "You must never sleep!" and she said "Very little". But the volume certainly isn't what it was in years past. I have a note that I wrote the first year we opened saying "Don't give up on Christmas too soon" It has become my Words To Live By this year. Come ON, customers!
